Historia
Harry Haller is a sad and lonely figure, a reclusive intellectual for whom life holds no joy. He struggles to reconcile the wild primeval wolf and the rational man within himself without surrendering to the bourgeois values he despises. His life changes dramatically when he meets a woman who is his opposite, the carefree and elusive Hermine.

Steer clear!
Revisado: 09-27-11
Almost halfway through the book, I still found the book to be largely self-indulgent, self-pitying rhetoric, intermingled with scathing criticism of the bourgoise existence. Hesse's racist comments on the "primitive n----r" on which he bases his animal-like alter-ego analogy does not endear him to me either. A product of Nazi Germany, one would have hoped for more insight almost 2 decades later. He holds eastern religion in high regard, but one has to wonder if he had as much regard for the easteners themselves. It does not hold much value to its listeners.
The book is no more than a maturing man's search for enjoyment and acceptance in this life, as a means to prevent himself from committing suicide. In this quest he searches through all vices, including all the sexual vices. In the end he is nothing but another druggee on a high, subjecting his lamentable listeners to his 'mad' ravings.

Raggedly readable
Revisado: 09-12-11
A well-developed plot allows for this detective story to be enjoyed by anyone who loves to solve crimes from the armchair. The characters are not as intriguing as one would hope for and a little predictable. The end is somewhat rushed and disappointing, as if the author was in a sudden hurry to end a story that until that point was very enjoyable. Well read and enthusiastically performed.

Historia
For most couples, a quiet dinner for two at Auberge de la Reine Blanche on the Ile Saint Louis would be just the thing to smooth out the complications in a romance. But for gorgeous Mossad operative Delilah and trying-to-retire contract killer John Rain, nothing is ever easy, and when Rain sees a crew of hard-looking men setting up outside the restaurant, he realizes someone has been bringing her work home with her.

Macho action
Revisado: 09-12-11
This was a fun action-packed short story written in the first person. It is performed in a suave macho style which makes the character come to life in the mind's eye. A fun listen which has me thinking I might just be willing to get some more Barry Eislers.

Almost great listening
Revisado: 09-10-11
The story took its time to develop and only about halfway through did it start to become gripping. From that point on it was really good listening, though, making the struggle through the 'intro' time well spent. It the rushed to the end resulting in a somewhat predictable conclusion. And then sadly it carried on for another almost 45 minutes of unnecessary 'wrapping-up.' It was not a bad listen, but I have certainly enjoyed better. The narrator was good and paced the story well.

Superb
Revisado: 09-03-11
This classic story of love, betrayal and revenge is a winner in any format, but John Lee adds a whole new dimension to the pleasure one derives from this story through his superb narration. The speed of his reading, the intonation of his voice and the brilliant interpretations of the various accents all combine to become a listening pleasure. I found myself impatient for the next opportunity to block out the world and immerse myself in the narration.
