Historia
In a boarded-up house on a dead-end street at the edge of the wild Washington woods lives a family of three. A teenage girl who isn’t allowed outside, not after last time. A man who drinks alone in front of his TV, trying to ignore the gaps in his memory. And a house cat who loves napping and reading the Bible. An unspeakable secret binds them together, but when a new neighbor moves in next door, what is buried out among the birch trees may come back to haunt them all.

Absolutely outstanding, I was blown away.
Revisado: 11-13-24
The writing and plot are amazing! I generally avoid extremely disturbing horror books but it’s worth it for this one. There are so many twists that are weaved into the story perfectly. It’s all very well thought out. The performance was great, this is one of the best voice casts I’ve heard. I especially loved how Olivia the cat is written.

Historia
When high school senior Charlotte agrees to babysit the Wilbanks twins, she plans to put the six-year-olds to bed early and spend a quiet night studying: the SATs are tomorrow, and checking the Native American/Alaskan Native box on all the forms doesn’t mean jack if you choke on test day. But tomorrow is also Halloween, and the twins are eager to show off their costumes—Ron is a nurse, in an old-fashioned white skirt-uniform, and Desi has an Authentic Squaw costume, complete with buckskin and feathered headdress. Excitement is in the air.

Twists and turns
Revisado: 11-13-24
A great read! I thought the pacing was good and the writing style is fantastic. I liked the characters and found them all very believable! It got confusing at times and I lost the plot during some points, but there were some really creative and surprising elements. I didn’t love the ending, but overall it was good! Weirdly reminds me of the movie Vivarium.

Very Eerie and confusing!
Revisado: 11-13-24
An interesting read, there were some parts that were absolutely terrifying and very gripping! I was on the edge of my seat. It sometimes got difficult to keep the story straight. There are a lot of moving parts. I didn’t like the ending unfortunately, but overall I really enjoyed the rest of the story. This reminds me a lot of ‘The Babysitter Lives’ by Stephen Graham Jones. They’re very similar, if you like one you’ll like the other. (There’s also some Morse code to decipher)

Historia
Alma Katsu calls My Heart Is a Chainsaw “a homage to slasher films that also manages to defy and transcend genre.” On the surface is a story of murder in small-town America. But beneath is its beating heart: a biting critique of American colonialism, Indigenous displacement, and gentrification, and a heartbreaking portrait of a broken young girl who uses horror movies to cope with the horror of her own life.

Fantastic story and well written
Revisado: 05-15-24
I was on the edge of my seat for the entire book! I found the main character very relatable and fun to listen to. She reminds me a lot of others I know.
I thought the portions from her slasher essays lended well to her character, although I can see why people see it as ramble-y. But personally, I appreciated them.
I really enjoyed the ending and the performance was great. I don’t think you have to be a horror/slasher fan to listen to this. The biggest references are from classic horror movies that everybody has seen at least once.

Wow! Great story and performance!
Revisado: 11-20-23
I loved this book! It was written very well, the characters showed a lot of personality and the pacing was great. I’m not usually a fan of paranormal/haunting elements but this story is very engaging. The ending was amazing, sounds cliche, but I was on the edge of my seat! It was also performed very well- the voice actress was the perfect pick.

Not what I expected, but a good story!
Revisado: 11-16-23
If you’re looking for heavy horror and paranormal themes this isn’t the book for you, but its still an enjoyable story. To me it was very nostalgic and I liked the characters and was invested in their relationships with each other. I wish it was a bit grittier and explored more supernatural and occult elements but overall, a nice read.

Enjoyed the story although it isn’t what I was expecting!
Revisado: 05-27-23
This story is beautifully written, I loved the imagery throughout the book. Her descriptions are so visceral! I won’t spoil anything but I expected it to be more ‘true crime’ and there were some supernatural elements instead. I thought it started moving a little fast towards the end, but still a great read. I’d recommend it :)
