Historia
The government is a vast, complex system that Americans pay for, rebel against, rely upon, dismiss, and celebrate. It’s also our shared resource for addressing the biggest problems of society. And it’s made up of people, mostly unrecognized and uncelebrated, doing work that can be deeply consequential and beneficial to everyone. Michael Lewis invited his favorite writers, including Casey Cep, Dave Eggers, John Lanchester, Geraldine Brooks, Sarah Vowell, and W. Kamau Bell, to join him in finding someone doing an interesting job for the government and writing about them.

Great stories of individual contributions
Revisado: 03-26-25
There are some great individual stories about government employees who have done some amazing work behind the scenes.
Some of the narrators are very annoying to listen to. Some are great.

Historia
Jacob Finch Bonner was once a promising young novelist with a respectably published first book. Today, he’s teaching in a third-rate MFA program and struggling to maintain what’s left of his self-respect; he hasn’t written—let alone published—anything decent in years. When Evan Parker, his most arrogant student, announces he doesn’t need Jake’s help because the plot of his book in progress is a sure thing, Jake is prepared to dismiss the boast as typical amateur narcissism. But then...he hears the plot.

Narrator was awful & plot easily figured out
Revisado: 12-13-24
First of all the only way I could listen is to increase the speed and even then it was like nails on a blackboard.
It was fun to have the story and the book interweaved. However, it didn’t take long to figure out the plot.

Characters and plot get pretty unbelievably
Revisado: 07-11-24
Starting out interesting and fun to listen to. Fun narration with the female and male characters. However, not sure why the female narrator has to narrate men when there is a male narrator as well. Plot gets muddled with unbelievable characters and events. The cop beats up one guy and doesn’t get relieved of duty or charged but does when he does same with another guy? A lot of loose ends towards the end as off the writer has the end written and tries to fit things in to that.

Little cliche but a fun listen
Revisado: 10-09-23
Started out strong with an unexpected stabbing of a corps and fun turns and twists. The cats and dolphins added to the story. Who knew dolphins were like longshore workers.
Dragged in the middle but wrapped up in the end. The book is not going to win the noble peace price but it’s great fun especially With Will Wheaton as the narrator.

Historia
Colonel Joe Bishop made a promise and he's going to keep it; taking the captured alien starship Flying Dutchman back out. He doesn't agree when the UN decides to send almost 70 elite Special Operations troops, hotshot pilots, and scientists with him; the mission is a fool's errand he doesn't expect to ever return from. At least, this time, the Earth is safe, right? Not so much.

Almost death, new plan, recover, rinse and repeat
Revisado: 10-04-23
First book had a much better plot. There was some interesting and funny moments but it dragged on with the same concept with a catastrophe, new plan, almost sure death and then boom survival. Rinse and repeat about 10 times.
The narrator is great to listen to and overcame some of the monotony of the same plot.

Great narrator interesting plot until close to the end
Revisado: 09-09-23
Love listening to the narrator with the Scottish tongue. The story starts of strong and moves forward. Certainly there is some humor but mostly the story is a medical thriller with info on serial medical killers interspersed. It starts to drag towards the end and the end was weak. Like the author ran out of steam and couldn’t come up with a decent plot ending.

I thought it was a thriller … definitely not
Revisado: 08-27-23
I thought I downloaded a murder mystery that played in and around wine. Was I wrong. It’s a story about wine import and the drama of working for a company. Nothing happens. It just kinda drags along - kinda like working for any other company. Don’t expect to learn much about wine. There are some references but that’s about it.

Over the top with implausible actions
Revisado: 08-10-23
Although I like the narrator in general, he is not consistent in properly pronouncing things like Edinburgh. Also his accents tend to be one sighted and for example the Dutch banker has the weirdest accent but it isn’t Dutch. Story is over the top and highly implausible.

Although there were a few funny moments, it was mostly gruesome and designed for shock value. The narrator mispronunciation certain names and you can hear him swallowing and breathing.

Sue Grafton's X: Perhaps her darkest and most chilling novel, it features a remorseless serial killer who leaves no trace of his crimes. Once again breaking the rules and establishing new paths, Grafton wastes little time identifying this sociopath. The test is whether Kinsey can prove her case against him before she becomes his next victim.

More soap opera then murder mystery
Revisado: 06-30-23
This story had a lot of side lines that didn’t really add to the main plot. The main story was a bit predictable and dragged on.
The side stories leaned towards the soap opera. Ok to listen to when you are doing some chores but definitely not the usual.
