Historia
In virtually every way that can be measured, Gen Z’s mental health is worse than that of previous generations. Youth suicide rates are climbing, antidepressant prescriptions for children are common, and the proliferation of mental health diagnoses has not helped the staggering number of kids who are lonely, lost, sad and fearful of growing up. What’s gone wrong with America’s youth? In Bad Therapy, bestselling investigative journalist Abigail Shrier argues that the problem isn’t the kids—it’s the mental health experts.

Vital, urgent, sane, unexpectedly funny
Revisado: 04-28-24
Desperately needed corrective to all the forces making parents feel out of control, and making them cede their common sense to a metastasizing industry with a track record of failure and misery. Shrier minces no words, and there’s plenty of flat-out polemic here, but it’s what most of us need to shake us awake. She has a gift for metaphor and is continually surprising you with laugh-out-loud moments. Audio version is excellent.

As one of the few black students in his philosophy program at Columbia University years ago, Coleman Hughes wondered why his peers seemed more pessimistic about the state of American race relations than his own grandparents–who lived through segregation. The End of Race Politics is the culmination of his years-long search for an answer.

Historia
Many famed music producers are known for a particular sound that has its day. Rick Rubin is known for something else: creating a space where artists of all different genres and traditions can home in on who they really are and what they really offer. He has made a practice of helping people transcend their self-imposed expectations in order to reconnect with a state of innocence from which the surprising becomes inevitable. Over the years, he has learned that being an artist isn’t about your specific output, it’s about your relationship to the world.

Take it from a working artist with decades of experience: this guy knows his stuff. Countless vital lessons you have to learn and relearn over a creative life: they’re all here. Spiritual sustenance and practical advice. I will revisit this often, and but many copies for others. The audio version is an extra treat.

By the end of the book, it’s amazing how her extensive research and argument comes down to what so long was common sense, should be today, and will be again. Great and important read.

Historia
Donal Ryan's short stories pick up where his acclaimed novels The Spinning Heart and The Thing About December left off, dealing with dramas set in motion by loneliness and displacement and revealing stories of passion and desire where less astute observers might fail to detect the humanity that roils beneath the surface. Sometimes these dramas are found in ordinary, mundane situations; sometimes they are triggered by a fateful encounter or a tragic decision. At the heart of these stories, crucially, is how people are drawn to each other and cling to love when and where it can be found.

Revisado: 09-29-22
I am not a reader given to hyperbole, but believe me that there is no praise high enough for this collection. Ryan is hands-down one of the finest living writers working in English. The Audible performance is a masterpiece in itself. Can’t recommend it strongly enough.

Historia
Of the many recent books on the historical Jesus, none has explored what the latest biblical scholarship means for personal faith. Now, in Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time, Marcus Borg addresses the yearnings of those who want a fully contemporary faith that welcomes rather than oppresses our critical intelligence and openness to the best of historical scholarship. Borg shows how a rigorous examination of historical findings can lead to a new faith in Christ, one that is critical and, at the same time, sustaining.

Good compact introduction to Borg
Revisado: 04-29-22
Came to this through Diana Butler Bass’ recommendation and wasn’t disappointed. Engaging, provocative, and entirely listenable, as it was based on a series of lectures. Fine neutral narration too.
Borg stretches a bit on some points (suggesting logos and sophia are “functionally equivalent”), but overall it’s well worth a read/listen or two.

Word spread, and soon his bulletins were being eagerly consumed by readers around the country and beyond. In this thought-provoking and invigorating book, Heber-Percy draws upon a kaleidoscopic knowledge of nature, philosophy, poetry and music, as well as religious writings, and interlaces them with amusing and touching vignettes from his Wiltshire parish.

Historia
Rohr reprises his best-selling talks on scripture in this powerful new series. He describes the Bible as a text in travail, containing not just conclusions, but a process that mirrors our own journey (three steps forward, two steps backward). In the three steps forward, Scripture always reveals that we are related to something infinite and that ours is an enchanted and trustworthy universe.

Valuable, but VERY heady
Revisado: 03-19-22
I’ve read many of Rohr’s books and listened to dozens of hours of his talks, and this series hits many of his most valuable themes, but even by his standards, it’s extremely heady and at times difficult to follow. The talk on grace is an exception—it’s excellent. If you’re looking for a better place to start, try his Great Themes of St. Paul, which is brilliant and grounded.

Historia
Dante Alighieri was early in recognizing that our age has a problem. His hometown, Florence, was at the epicenter of the move from the medieval world to the modern. The Divine Comedy was born in a time of troubling transition, which is why it still speaks today. In this narrative retelling and guide, from the gates of hell, up the mountain of purgatory, to the empyrean of paradise, Mark Vernon offers a vivid introduction and interpretation of a book that, 700 years on, continues to open minds and change lives.

A delight, and a must for spiritual seekers
Revisado: 02-10-22
This book is a gift. It’s like having a wise, generous, and endlessly insightful friend lead you through one of the greatest works of world literature--not just as literature, but as an incomparable guide for the spiritual path.
Vernon writes (and in the Audible version, narrates) beautifully, achieving an agile balance of summary, close reading, and context that brings the Divine Comedy alive canto by canto. Most importantly, he uncovers fresh psychological and spiritual insights in even the more obscure sections.
You'll come away staggered by the scale of Dante’s achievement, and invigorated by the timeliness and urgency of his vision as elucidated by Vernon. Brilliant work.

Historia
Who was Friedrich Nietzsche? This lonely and chronically ill, yet passionate, daring, and complex man is perhaps the most mysterious and least understood of all contemporary philosophers. Why are his brilliant insights so relevant for today? How did he become the most misinterpreted and unfairly maligned intellectual figure of the last two centuries?

Great effort, pales beside the real thing
Revisado: 05-15-18
The professors’ enthusiasm for and commitment to Nietzsche, his work, and his thinking is unmistakable. But having read quite a bit of Nietzsche himself, it was hard not to be disappointed...their earnest paraphrasing falls so far short of the original works—probably inevitably—I kept thinking, “I should just be rereading/listening to the real thing.” And that’s what I’d recommend to the Nietzsche-curious. Go straight to the source. What interpretation and context you need, you can get from the Introduction to any Walter Kaufmann edition/translation.
