Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Terrible narration
Revisado: 09-15-23
I am trying to get through this, because I believe the story is worthwhile. However, it is torture listening to this narration. The narrator uses the same voice for every character, making it almost impossible to keep up with who is speaking. I was going to return this title, but I got it in a 2 for 1 deal, and actually loved the other book on the deal. 😒

Excellent afternoon listen!
Revisado: 09-03-23
Love Donnely’s books and Chester Cheater was great. Perfect afternoon creepy listen while I decorated for Halloween! His slasher books have a very nostalgic feel to to them, and while he definitely borrows from many previous stories, his writing feels fresh and with a twists you don’t figure out until the end.

Passionate, earthy, deeply affecting, The Red Tent combines rich storytelling with a valuable contribution to modern fiction: a vibrant new perspective of female life in the age that shaped present day civilization and values.
If you like The Red Tent, try The Harlot by the Side of the Road, a recounting of some of the most startling and explicit writings from The Old Testament.

Author is anti-Jewish

Great narration, but I get the feeling the author hates the Jewish people and their story. Disappointing.

Could have been better
Revisado: 08-19-19
The story was just okay. The narrator made the main character sound like Peter Parker, a teenaged Spider-Man, instead of the Amos Decker of the first novel. This second audio book killed my interest in the third one, because they used the same narrator. I much preferred the first audiobook.

Beautiful narration.
Revisado: 06-09-19
The narration of this story is beautiful...spot on. I’m from North Carolina, and this rings true. But the story is dark. Very dark. It is somewhat depressing. I read Dean Koontz and Stephen King, but the darkness of this book bothered me more because there was no supernatural element...just ugly humanity. So, while I enjoyed it very much and will definitively read more from this author, I feel the need to follow this with some lighthearted reading. Stephanie Plum, here I come.

The Poisonwood Bible is a story told by the wife and four daughters of Nathan Price, a fierce, evangelical Baptist who takes his family and mission to the Belgian Congo in 1959. They carry with them everything they believe they will need from home, but soon find that all of it - from garden seeds to Scripture - is calamitously transformed on African soil. What follows is a suspenseful epic of one family’s tragic undoing and remarkable reconstruction over the course of three decades in postcolonial Africa.

Annoying narrators
Revisado: 03-10-17
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The story lines is fairly interesting. I would have probably enjoyed reading, but listening to the audiobook was annoying. The narrator makes most of the adult professionals sound like overly dramatic, snarky twelve year olds.
How could the performance have been better?
The narrator needs acting lessons, or more life experience.
Was Sloane Monroe Series Boxed Set, Books 1-3 worth the listening time?
No
