Even before reading about the holes and lies in this account warning flags were leaping up at me. The skydiving story at the beginning, shown to be false, was “too to” to be believed, as were Dr Alexander’s given reasons for leaving Harvard etc. Early in the account he claims to have left for a “slower” pace of life back home in the south. Later he admits career issues, but only obliquely. The malpractice, lies, and maimed patients are never mentioned.

Also, this book resembles no orthodox view of faith. Eben presents himself as a prophet essentially, but he is a prophet of the most vapid and simple “new agey” maxims. His story about his brain being shut down doesn’t hold to scrutiny. In fact he was just in a chemically induced coma,

This is a sad manipulative book which reads as if it were written by a narcissist. Not worth the time

This is simply a recipe for increasing levels of narcissism in our society. Learn self compassion and mindfulness as opposed to buying into dominance hierarchies. This is a truly awful book.

I bought this book and listened to it to balance my reading of Piketty. Von Mises is a free market luminary and his conclusions and recommendations would certainly contradict an author like Piketty. Mises' book, however, is extremely unconvincing. Despite the author's claims that he is scientific, there is no data contained in the book; it is entirely based on logical argumentation. While the arguments are mostly internally consistent they often are built on false premises or consist of straw man attacks on his opponents.

The reading style is appropriate to Mises' voice: pompous and over-the-top. It's s solid performance but there are serious issues with splicing one recording session into another; the audio quality varies widely at times.

I was struck by just how bigoted Von Mises was when it came to religion. His hatred of Christianity was certainly on display here. He was not above including long, and incompetently written, forays into theology to mock the faith.

I recommend people read this work to see the ideology that animates many American elites, such as the Koch brothers. If people knew exactly how these elites viewed them, essentially as stupid peasants with a pathetic faith in Christ, they would not enjoy the support that they have.

This book is easily one of the best I have ever listened to. It is Flanery O'Connor, so one must be prepared to read this text like someone who understands literature. Remember that O'Connor is deeply rooted in Catholicism, and scholasticism. Remember that she is first and foremost a committed Christian. Her characters will be grotesque, and there will be tremendous violence and disturbing images, but the book will stick with you forever. It will point to deeper transcendent truths that are timeless and eternal.

Reading Flannery O'Connor will enrich your life, but please understand that you are not listening to surface level romance novels / John Grisham stuff here. This takes hard work and patience, but it is work that will be deeply enriching should you undertake it.

The narration is perfect. The southern accent throughout is very important, and the individual voices of each character are pitch perfect. Simply outstanding.
