Historia
When sixty-three-year-old Sylvia finds her husband in bed with the floozy of their Boca retirement community, she’s shocked and furious . . . at first. By the time her head stops spinning, Sylvia realizes that actually, this isn’t what she wants anymore anyway. So she enlists her best friend, the glamorous older widow Evie, to join her in setting up a new life in Manhattan. Sylvia’s ex-husband may have lost her life savings, but Sylvia and Evie are scrappy and determined, unopposed to pawning jewelry and roughing it in tiny apartments.

Ready for MY second act!
Revisado: 02-15-25
I thoroughly enjoyed this! Admittedly it may not have been totally realistic, but the hopeful tone really lifted my spirits and as listened often caught myself with a slight smile on my face. I loved the idea of a 60-something taking charge of her life and truly living. Still in my 50s, and feeling at a bit of a crossroads, I found Sylvia’s optimism refreshing: it’s never too late to start owning and living your best life!

Made me want to learn more about ISG
Revisado: 01-25-24
I remember visiting Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum when I was young and really being drawn at the place and the theft that occurred. Although fictionalized, I really enjoyed this book and found myself wanting to know more about Isabella Stewart Gardner the book was well written, and held my attention throughout. The only thing I would’ve liked better had there been a little bit more about the real woman included in the book, I would definitely recommend to fans of historical fiction.

Historia
As a kid, Charlotte Illes’ uncanny sleuthing abilities made her a minor celebrity. But in high school, she hung up her detective’s hat and stashed away the signature blue landline in her “office”—aka garage—convinced that finding her adult purpose would be as easy as tracking down missing pudding cups or locating stolen diamonds.

Cute concept for adults who were young literary sleuth fans
Revisado: 01-25-24
As a kid, I was a huge fan of books like a Boxcar Children, Trixie Belden, Encyclopedia Brown, etc. so I thought the concept for this book would be entertaining. I expect I would’ve enjoyed this book a bit more if I were in my 20s or early 30s. As a Gen X-er, I found it a little hard to relate to the characters.

Appreciated the authenticity but hard to listen to
Revisado: 07-24-22
I really enjoyed “Last of the Moon Girls” and was very excited to listen to this book. The subject of this sounds great and I appreciate the use of an authentic accent to bring the story to life. However, that is what caused me to not finish the book since it made for a rather challenging listen. I don’t want to dissuade anyone from pursuing this book but wished to note that for some listeners with hearing issues the accent may make it harder to get through. Perhaps I will try to actually read this one instead or look for other titles by the author because I really did enjoy the “Last of the Moon Girls” so much.

Historia
Sir John Penlyon is planning to spend Christmas at his estate with his niece and his friend Danby, the closest thing he has to family since disowning his daughter years ago. (She eloped with the parson, who was, of course, penniless.) Danby suggests that at Christmastime the estate needs the presence of small children, and offers to find some - the “hirelings” - despite Sir John’s skepticism. Three children duly arrive, and the youngest, precocious four year-old Moppet, quickly endears herself to Sir John.

Not for me
Revisado: 12-14-20
A few years ago I started this story and just couldn’t get into it a few chapters in so I stopped. This year I thought I’d give it another listen. The length of the book was great for a holiday story and this time I did finish but it just wasn’t the holiday story for me. I didn’t feel quite as uplifted as I had hoped. However, that’s what I do love about books - some we connect with others not so much, but in both cases we can find more about ourselves and others. It’s only a few hours so maybe it will resonate more with you!

Pleasant surprise
Revisado: 10-09-20
I loved the timeliness of this story! I could also see my dad in the trusting and oft lonely Don Barlow and myself in his “busy” and cynical/wary/mistrusting daughter. I also enjoyed the length of the story! Lately I’ve been running into good books ruined by just running too long.

Made me wonder..
Revisado: 12-27-19
What if holding on to grief for our loved ones too long not only keeps us from moving on but them too? Approaching the two year anniversary of losing my mom, this was a timely read for me. Grief has no timeline and as shown by the characters in this book affects all differently. Definitely a good read that made me think, kept me engaged and coming back each moment I had to listen.

Won’t be my “last” in this series!
Revisado: 12-27-19
First, I love books read by Amy McFadden. She has a way of delivering the story that brings they characters to life. Because of that I often come to authors by way of “other books narrated by Amy McFadden”. Such was the case in finishing this little gem by Abigail Keam. I really enjoyed the main character, Eva, and found her spunky and relatable. It’s also nice when the primary characters are in their 40s and not 20, still “living” and believing in love and having hope for their futures. It gives the reader a bit of hope and a break from their lives too. The length was good - though I was sorry when it ended because I was enjoying it so much, but knowing it’s a series I’ll just go look for the next now!

Length was perfect, but story not for me
Revisado: 12-27-19
On the positive side, there was nothing in this book that took me on an emotional roller coaster; nothing that depressed me, made me feel guilty or question the “real” meaning of Christmas, family, friendship, etc. - which seems to happen in many holiday books. So for that it was refreshing. However, I couldn’t find myself really connecting to the characters nor the story itself. I appreciate that the story was under 3hrs, though with that limitation more time was needed on resolving the “conflict” - 10yrs of anger and resentment all seemed too easily forgiven and moved on from.

Pleasantly surprised by the story; long pauses distracting
Revisado: 03-11-19
This was my first Barbara Kingsolver book, but it won’t be my last! After a number of more intense books, I was looking for just a “nice” story, but not a sappy romance. This fit the bill perfectly. There were enough characters to provide diversity, but not so many you felt you needed a chart to keep them straight and there was enough drama to keep it interesting but not with an intensity that left me feeling stressed. I’ll admit some aspects seemed rather implausible, but maybe it’s a different time/place. Still, that didn’t bother me and that kind of thing normal does.
My one complaint though is there were unnecessarily long pauses between chapters and randomly during them, and I wasn’t even listening to it at 1x speed! I got used to it after the first few chapters, but initially I thought something was wrong with the playback/my device.
All in all I would recommend to anyone just looking for a book that provokes some thought, continues to have some relevance today, and ends on a positive note.
