Ugh. The dreaded mid-series narrator-change strikes again
Revisado: 06-12-22
Excellent books. A large, complex, beautiful world, fully formed, interesting characters. Very well told, and delightfully cohesive, without GRR Martin’s malicious arrogance, and obvious contempt for his readers. This is all going so well. Hey! I know!!! Let’s change narrators!!! The new guy should be someone who has two, maybe three character voices, all male, and can’t remember which accent a character was using in the last sentence!!! Yes, that’s exactly what we should do!!! Oh, and he should definitely pronounce names, place-names, and all other words differently each time!!! WHY DOES AUDIBLE DO THIS!?!?!? AAAAAAAAAAAARGH!!!!

Throughout the Gulf War of 1991, unprecedented restrictions on the media’s access to the battlefield kept the true story of that brief, brutal conflict from being told. Now, after two years of intensive research, Rick Atkinson has written what will surely come to be recognized as the definitive chronicle of the war.

Quite possibly one of the top three worst narrators I’ve ever heard on Audible. Probably a good story. Gonna have to just buy the book.

Historia
By the end of February 1944, thanks to hard-fought and costly American victories in the first and second naval battles of Guadalcanal, the battle of Empress Augusta Bay and the battle of Cape St George, the Japanese would no longer hold the materiel or skilled manpower advantage. From this point on, although the war was still a long way from being won, the American star was unquestionably on the ascendant, slowly, but surely, edging Japanese imperialism towards its sunset.

Bloodlands is a new kind of European history, presenting the mass murders committed by the Nazi and Stalinist regimes as two aspects of a single history, in the time and place where they occurred: between Germany and Russia, when Hitler and Stalin both held power. Assiduously researched, deeply humane, and utterly definitive, Bloodlands will be required listening for anyone seeking to understand the central tragedy of modern history.

This could be a really good book...I’m going to have to read it, though. The bumbling, braying, mush-mouthed performance, which has come to be Ralph Cosham’s signature, makes any story, no matter how good, utterly unlistenable.

Historia
Even after the legendary evacuation from Dunkirk in June 1940 there were still large British formations fighting the Germans alongside their French allies. After mounting a vigorous counterattack at Abbeville and then engaging a tough defense along the Somme, the British were forced to conduct a second evacuation from the ports of Le Havre, Cherbourg, Brest, and St. Nazaire. Case Red captures the drama of the final three weeks of military operations in France in June 1940.

Historia
Pagans explores the rise of Christianity from a surprising and unique viewpoint: that of the people who witnessed their ways of life destroyed by what seemed then a powerful religious cult. These "pagans" were actually pious Greeks, Romans, Syrians, and Gauls, who observed the traditions of their ancestors. To these devout polytheists, Christians who worshiped only one deity were immoral atheists who believed that a splash of water on the deathbed could erase a lifetime of sin.

Historia
Using his own experiences, log books, and correspondence with other U-boat crewmen, Hans Goebeler offers rich and personal details about what life was like in the German Navy under Hitler. Since his first and last posting was to U-505, Goebeler's perspective of the crew, commanders, and war patrols paints a vivid and complete portrait unlike any other to come out of the Kriegsmarine. He witnessed it all, from deadly sabotage efforts that almost sunk the boat to the tragic suicide of the only U-boat commander who took his life during World War II.

I've listened to thousands of hours of Audiobooks. While I've come to be rather inured to the occasional horrible narration, I couldn't get past the first hour of this story. I mean seriously. Doesn't anyone vet these guys, or can just anyone off the street come in and somehow slur through his teeth and his nose, at the same time?

In The Vanquished, a highly original and gripping work of history, Robert Gerwarth asks us to think again about the true legacy of the First World War. In large part it was not the fighting on the Western Front that proved so ruinous to Europe's future but the devastating aftermath, as countries on both sides of the original conflict were savaged by revolutions, pogroms, mass expulsions, and further major military clashes.

Historia
For seven decades, our understanding of World War II has been shaped by a standard narrative built on conventional wisdom, propaganda, the dramatic but narrow experiences of soldiers on the ground, and an early generation of historians. For his new history, James Holland has spent over 12 years unearthing new research, recording original testimony, and visiting battlefields and archives that have never before been so accessible.

If there was an option to give the performance negative stars, I would do it.
Revisado: 02-05-16
The narrator should be chained to a wall, kept awake for weeks on end, and forced to listen to his narration until he cracks, and collapses into a blubbering heap of broken humanity. Seriously. Where do they find these "performers"? Do they just walk down the street, choosing people at random? Christ...nothing like wasting your money on a decent book, rendered unlistenable by an utterly incompetent narrator. Do yourself a favor, read the book.

Historia
On October 2, 1918, Maj. Charles W. Whittlesey led the 77th Division in a successful attack on German defenses in the Argonne Forest of northeastern France. His unit, comprised of men of a wide mix of ethnic backgrounds from New York City and the western states, was not a battalion nor was it ever "lost", but once a newspaper editor applied the term "lost battalion" to the episode, it stuck.

The narrator's condescending, bored, uninspired performance utterly destroys any possibility of enjoying this story. The tone the narrator sets, is one of an indifferent teacher, reading a despised story, to a roomful of imbeciles. Seriously, if the narrator's internal monologue is in any way similar to his performance in this story, he'd best be put on suicide watch.
