Historia
J. M. W. Turner is one of the most important figures in Western art, and his visionary work paved the way for a revolution in landscape painting. Over the course of his lifetime, Turner strove to liberate painting from an antiquated system of patronage. Bringing a new level of expression and color to his canvases, he paved the way for the modern artist.

Dry but competent
Revisado: 07-24-22
This was a detailed biography that struggled to engage me as a reader. Although thorough in covering the events of Turners life, it is not an entertaining review by a long shot.

Historia
Robert A. Heinlein wrote The Number of the Beast, which was published in 1980. In the book Zeb, Deety, Hilda, and Jake are ambushed by the alien "Black Hats" and barely escape with their lives on a specially configured vehicle (the Gay Deceiver) which can travel along various planes of existence, allowing them to visit parallel universes. However, unknown to most fans, Heinlein had already written a "parallel" novel about the four characters and parallel universes in 1977.

Terrible waste of time
Revisado: 07-24-22
I have read nearly every Heinlein book he ever wrote but struggled to get through this one.
80% of this was a build up that could have been done in a single chapter and the last two could have been expanded into an actual interesting story. I realize the backstory on how this was published but the people involved with compiling into a finished work did a really poor job. The choice of three narrators didn’t do anything to help improve on it either.

Good for escapism
Revisado: 07-08-19
Plot was a little weak and the only twists introduced were predictable.
A lot of time was spent on the mundane hand to hand combat in his life but overall it was good escapism for the time devoted to it.

Historia
The year is 1517. Dismas is a relic hunter: one who procures "authentic" religious relics for wealthy and influential clients. His two most important patrons are Frederick the Wise, elector of Saxony; and soon-to-be Cardinal Albrecht of Mainz. While Frederick is drawn to the recent writing of Martin Luther, Albrecht pursues the financial and political benefits of religion and seeks to buy a cardinalship through the selling of indulgences.

Disappointed when compared to other's
Revisado: 05-31-16
This was a disappointing treatment of a decent story idea. More or less flat characters, predictable plot within a very limited environmental elaboration. In short it was a very modern story with names changed and told against a backdrop of the Middle Ages. Could have been easily the same exact story in any other timeline in history.

Weaving history, legend, and new archaeological discoveries into a spellbinding narrative, critically acclaimed novelist Steven Saylor gives new life to the drama of Rome's first 1,000 years - from the founding of the city by the ill-fated twins Romulus and Remus, through Rome's astonishing ascent to become the capital of the most powerful empire in history.

Revisado: 05-31-16
Best in the series.
I've listened and read other historical fiction but most offer only a modern story within a "backdrop".
Saylor so meticulously details the environment, culture and politics of the time of the story that it's difficult to accept that it's not a firsthand account true events.

Historia
Rome, 56 BC. The great general Pompey has conquered the East; Julius Caesar is defeating the Gauls; only Egypt, with its strategic granaries and vast treasuries of gold, still eludes the grasp of Rome. The city itself is becoming ever more corrupt, as the last generation of the Roman Republic indulges in political backstabbing, endless lawsuits, scandalous love affairs, and the occasional murder.

Keeps getting better
Revisado: 03-05-16
I continued the Rosa sub Rosa series a little guarded after disappointment in Saylor's first book. This chapter of Gordiamous' life however was by far the best thus far in a series of steady progression in narrative detail, plot development and character building with each book.
I find myself now sneaking a few minutes here and there throughout my day to slip back into Ancient Rome and see how our protagonist and his family are doing.
I actually look forward now to my hourly commutes and all the traffic delays that come with them.

Historia
In Rome, 80 B.C., on a warm spring morning, Gordianus the Finder receives a summons to the house of a then-unknown young advocate and orator, Cicero. Ambitious and brilliant, the 26-year-old Cicero is about to argue his first important case. His client is a wealthy farmer, one Sextus Roscius of the town of Ameria, who stands accused of the most unforgivable act in Ancient Rome: the murder of his father.

Vivid Portrayal of Roman Life
Revisado: 01-15-16
What did you like best about Roman Blood? What did you like least?
I thoroughly enjoyed the vivid detail of Roman life but the story I found was a bit wooden and "sequential", much like you'd find in a first person shooter video game.
Each scene fed almost too neatly into the next, with equal time spent on each. A to B, B to C, C to D.
I don't want to say the plot was boring but it was rhythmic and predictable in its transitions to each part of the story. Im going to carry on with more in the series to see if Saylor's style matures.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Not really.
What didn’t you like about Scott Harrison’s performance?
Didn't.
His attempts to change his voice between characters was poorly executed and at points was painful to the ear.
Do you think Roman Blood needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
There are more in the series. This question doesn't apply.
