Historia
Cyrus Shams is a young man grappling with an inheritance of violence and loss: his mother’s plane was shot down over the skies of the Persian Gulf in a senseless accident; and his father’s life in America was circumscribed by his work killing chickens at a factory farm in the Midwest.

Not My Cup of Tea
Revisado: 02-10-25
Not surprised to find out the author is a poet. Some incredible writing but the story is just too disjointed and feels a little like a self indulgent exercise for the author.

Historia
In 1919, far-flung patriots establish the Korean Provisional Government to protest the Japanese occupation of their country. This government-in-exile proves mostly symbolic, though, and after Japan’s defeat in World War II, the KPG dissolves and civil war erupts, resulting in the tragic North-South split that remains today.

Historia
On January 28, 1742, a ramshackle vessel of patched-together wood and cloth washed up on the coast of Brazil. Inside were thirty emaciated men, barely alive, and they had an extraordinary tale to tell. They were survivors of His Majesty’s Ship the Wager, a British vessel that had left England in 1740 on a secret mission during an imperial war with Spain. While the Wager had been chasing a Spanish treasure-filled galleon known as “the prize of all the oceans,” it had wrecked on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia.

A great story of adventure treason and perseverance. The reader gets a great idea of what being a 18th century seaman was like.

Historia
On his last combat deployment, Lt. Cmdr. James Reece's entire team was killed in an ambush that also claimed the lives of the aircrew sent in to rescue them. But when those dearest to him are murdered on the day of his homecoming, Reece discovers that this was not an act of war by a foreign enemy but a conspiracy that runs to the highest levels of government. Now, with no family and free from the military's command structure, Reece applies the lessons that he's learned in over a decade of constant warfare toward revenge.

Fun Read, but totally unbelievable.
Revisado: 10-24-23
There some good writing and an interesting storyline, but this totally implausible. As much as I love justice being served, there’s a bit too much vigilante justice meted out for me. Still, technically correct from a military standpoint, and it sure kept my interest.

Historia
When Michael Lewis first met him, Sam Bankman-Fried was the world’s youngest billionaire and crypto’s Gatsby. CEOs, celebrities, and leaders of small countries all vied for his time and cash after he catapulted, practically overnight, onto the Forbes billionaire list. Who was this rumpled guy in cargo shorts and limp white socks, whose eyes twitched across Zoom meetings as he played video games on the side?

Maybe a bit premature
Revisado: 10-14-23
I am a big fan of Lewis, however, I find this is not quite up to snuff with his previous Works.
As always, Lewis does a very good job of explaining the complex crypto markets. I think he also does a fairly good job of describing what a quirky and unusual individual. Sam Bankman-Fried is. However, I think that what this book lacks is the perspective of how everything turns out once the trials are over. The trials are currently ongoing as I write this. Still, an interesting read about a huge and important financial topic in the 2020s.

Historia
The number one New York Times best-selling story about American Olympic triumph in Nazi Germany, the inspiration for the PBS documentary The Boys of '36, broadcast to coincide with the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 80th anniversary of the boys' gold medal race. Out of the depths of the Depression comes an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times - the improbable, intimate account of how nine working-class boys from the American West showed the world at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin what true grit really meant.

A Book Worth Multiple Readings

This is the second time I’ve read this book, and enjoyed it more the second time around. Even though the reader knows the outcome, it’s still a spellbinding and nail biting story.

The life story of a Holocaust survivor: his prewar childhood in Czechoslovakia, his experiences in eight Nazi concentration camps, his liberation and emigration to the US, and his career as a General Motors engineer, a Christian minister, and a consummate teacher. For Walter Ziffer, who today considers himself a Jewish secular humanist, life has always been a search for meaning. His compelling and insightful memoir distills the experiences of a remarkable man.

First person narrative of being Jewish during the rise of Hitler’s Reich is interesting. The recounting of his later life is rather tedious and not as interesting.

Following Jane from her childhood as an orphan in Northern England through her experience as a governess at Thornfield Hall, Charlotte Brontë's Gothic classic is an early exploration of women's independence in the mid-19th century and the pervasive societal challenges women had to endure. At Thornfield, Jane meets the complex and mysterious Mr. Rochester, with whom she shares a complicated relationship that ultimately forces her to reconcile the conflicting passions of romantic love and religious piety.
