Historia
What happened to Islamic reform? Why have al Qaeda and Boko Haram become the faces of contemporary Islam? Why has the Arab Spring devolved into a battle over sharia law? Continuing her personal journey from a deeply religious Islamic upbringing to a post at Harvard and American citizenship, the New York Times best-selling author of Infidel and Nomad crafts a powerful call for an Islamic reformation as the only way to end the current wave of global violence and repression of women.

One Courageous Woman
Revisado: 12-03-24
I read Infidel, Nomad, and now Heretic. Ayaan Hirsi Ali is one of the bravest women alive today. She is not only brilliant but her clarity of thought and extensive research make listening to her writing worthwhile. I wish that more people would become aware of her and her writings. I can’t recommend this book enough.

Many inconsistencies
Revisado: 11-02-24
The story is ridiculous. Puppies grow up fast. They become dogs. It’s most likely illegal let alone foolish to even think of keeping 6 dogs in a city.

Historia
Patric Gagne realized she made others uncomfortable before she started kindergarten. Something about her caused people to react in a way she didn’t understand. She suspected it was because she didn’t feel things the way other people did. Emotions like fear, guilt, and empathy eluded her. For the most part, she felt nothing. And she didn’t like the way that “nothing” felt.

The story is a fraud
Revisado: 07-27-24
Patric is fabricating this story. If you don’t believe it just go to book reviews on Amazon and read the one star reviews. I feel very foolish. I began to doubt her story as I progressed through her adulthood. I agree with the one star reviews. It’s a fantastic story. And I mean fantastic in a fantasy way. I doubt it she has a valid Ph.D. I wouldn’t feel cheated if it were a novel or historical fiction. But as a memoir I am beyond skeptical.

Historia
In 1945, Germany lay in ruins, morally and materially. Its citizens stood condemned by history, responsible for a horrifying genocide and war of extermination. But by the end of Angela Merkel’s tenure in 2021, Germany looked like the moral voice of Europe. How did a nation whose past has been marked by mass murder reinvent themselves, and how much? Trentmann tells this dramatic story of the German people from the middle of the Second World War through the Cold War and the division of East and West to the fall of the Berlin Wall and their struggle to find their place in the world today.

A very long book
Revisado: 03-20-24
The author has great faith in futuristic predictions. Believing all the doomsday predictions about climate change that are challenged by other scientists. I can’t believe that I stuck with this book. I’m going to Germany this summer and I hoped for some insights. I was disappointed.

Historia
Elise Sontag is a typical Iowa 14-year-old in 1943 - aware of the war but distanced from its reach. Then her father, a legal US resident for nearly two decades, is suddenly arrested on suspicion of being a Nazi sympathizer. The family is sent to an internment camp in Texas, where behind the armed guards and barbed wire, Elise feels stripped of everything beloved and familiar, including her own identity. The only thing that makes the camp bearable is meeting fellow internee Mariko Inoue, a Japanese-American teen from Los Angeles.

Revisado: 02-16-24
I love this book. The characters were so real. And inspiring. I learned a lot about WWII and I thought I was very knowledgeable about that topic. I knew about the internment camps but nothing in depth. I am sad that the book is finished.

Historia
In The War on the West, Douglas Murray shows how many well-meaning people have been fooled by hypocritical and inconsistent anti-West rhetoric. After all, if we must discard the ideas of Kant, Hume, and Mill for their opinions on race, shouldn’t we discard Marx, whose work is peppered with racial slurs and anti-Semitism? Embers of racism remain to be stamped out in America, but what about the raging racist inferno in the Middle East and Asia?

Finally some sanity
Revisado: 01-29-24
Murray’s chapter on gratitude is particularly interesting. He explains how the resentment of the “woke” and their laziness and incompetence makes them want to destroy others more successful than themselves. They try to conceal their motives with a mantle of social justice but Murray shows them as they actually are. Losers. Destroyers. Rightly objects of disgust who can only deconstruct instead of creating.

Take a trip back to Jane Austen's world and the many places she lived as historian Lucy Worsley visits Austen's childhood home, her schools, her holiday accommodations, the houses - both grand and small - of the relations upon whom she was dependent, and the home she shared with her mother and sister towards the end of her life.

Don’t give up. It can take a long time
Revisado: 12-11-23
I loved learning about Jane’s life. How she created her characters. And how she struggled financially and earned only slightly more than 600 pounds from all her books. It reinforced my view that a woman needs to be independent and quit hoping that a man will take care of her. Maybe one will find a sympathetic life partner but never stop cultivating friendships.

Historia
Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

Not Cutting For Stone
Revisado: 07-18-23
So disappointing. Maybe he needed the money. I’m sure it will be a movie or miniseries. It’s embarrassingly amateurish. Contrived story. The one theme that art justifies any behavior is trite. Melodramatic and corny. Very unconvincing that Elsie is a genius and a very great artist. I almost regret giving it 3 stars. Verghese shouldn’t narrate.
