An epic journey, beautifully written and performed.
A thoughtful prose of our place in the world.

I made it about 4 hours in before I decided, I just can’t finish this book. Not sure how it got such great reviews. The story is really silly. A guy inherits a starship from his grandfather and takes off into the galaxy to be a peacekeeper. Everyone in the universe seems to know about all of this except earthlings. They have been kept in the dark while all of the amazing technology is being used in other worlds all over the galaxy. The dialog with the “AI” (that looks like a bird and is his mentor) is unrealistic and corny. I kept rolling my eyes…and just stopped caring how it would end.
I wasted a credit on this book…and will probably delete it from my library.

This was a welcome change from the military, violent, alien war type first contact stories. Intelligent and thought provoking. Finally one I could actually finish!

Finally an apocalypse novel that wasn’t all military guns and evil people. It seems in most of this genre all the good people die and only the really evil people and a few weak people remain….except of course an ex-military sniper type that tries to save all the weakling humans. It gets really old.
I appreciated this more realistic view of human nature and actual struggles that would be experienced. I have often wondered when reading this genre how 90% of the people could die and suddenly there is absolutely no food or water. Not likely. These characters for the most part found what they needed to survive and tried to build lives in the rubble around them. It was a good story and I actually finished it, despite the narrator. That usually will end a story for me very quickly. I wasn’t that into the narrator as others seem to be. He was overly dramatic and his voices made characters seem rather dumb when they weren’t.
Authors/publishers out there…..this is a VERY important part of releasing an audio book. It can make or break it.

I didn’t quite make it through chapter 1. The narration was ridiculous. The story was getting an interesting start, and I would have like to continue, but I could stand the thought of listening to Ray Chase for another minute. He was overly dramatic and made the story and character sound stupid. Thank goodness the first book was free.

I am a fan of the post apocalyptic story. I rarely finish one because they all seem so similar. World ends...it seems only bad people remain except one soldier with PSTD and guns and one damsel in distress. Fights ensue with excruciating detail, blah, blah, blah. Rarely does something different come along.
This story was written decades ago, and is different. It assumes most people are not evil. Most people would band together to make things work. Most people would be concerned with living and not hunting others out to take their stuff.
The story is a bit naive, and the writing is simplistic and silly in many places...but I do believe in reality there would be something between fighting hoards and simple folks. I did at least finish this very long story.
It would be nice to see more stories written that look for some good and talk more about the struggles of life after an extinction event. There are a few, but I am thinking I must have read them all, because I can’t find one now.

The Edge of Collapse books 0 was very good and I expected this one to be too. What it turned out to be, was a story about crazy man chasing a woman that got away from him. It is hard to imagine anyone, even a psychopath, trying to chase down a woman for revenge during a snowstorm....and an apocalypse. This is not a story about survival from the collapse, it is a murder thriller. I won’t be purchasing the next book. Sounds like more of the same.

The storyline on this very long book was interesting. There were many times I had to fast forward to get pass the monotonous detail of every little piece of technology. I felt the author was overly impressed with his knowledge and wanted me to be. I wasn’t. I just want to get a brief description of the spacecraft, asteroid, etc and get on with the story. Not the minute detail of every hose, gadget, propulsion system, etc. etc....What took 31 hours, should have taken 15.
That being said, I did finish the story and liked it. It was different and unexpected. I would have loved it if not for the - god this is taking too long, I don’t care, what does this have to do with anything, fast forward, search for a good spot to reconnect thingy.

After reading the first 3 books, I was so disappointed in the last book. It had no plot. Just two groups of people killing each other and swearing a lot. I didn’t get the whole point of it. I was hoping the final book would be about the commune and how they worked to make it successful. This was the worse final episode I have ever seen...just dumb.
