Wow and wow!
Revisado: 04-21-20
If you need a story that drives itself while you drive the car, say on a roadtrip or the.like, this would be a good choice. The main character is about as basic as you get but a good every person to share and compare what you would do in his place.
The author nails the ending and you feel like "Yep, that is in fact the perfect ending."

Historia
When author Jeff Hobbs arrived at Yale University, he became fast friends with the man who would be his college roommate for four years, Robert Peace. Robert's life was rough from the beginning in the crime-ridden streets of Newark in the 1980s, with his father in jail and his mother earning less than $15,000 a year. But Robert was a brilliant student, and it was supposed to get easier when he was accepted to Yale, where he studied molecular biochemistry and biophysics.

Intricate, nuanced bio
Revisado: 02-01-20
Well written bio of the author's college roommate. Rob Peace sounds like a striking you man who had a lot of cards stacked against him and a lot of extraordinary chances to mitigate some of those cards. if a life can be weighed by how the people.who are left behind feel about a person than Rob Peace was a very worthy person.
I read the other reviews before buying this title and now wonder what book some of them listened to...

Historia
In Shaker Heights, a placid, progressive suburb of Cleveland, everything is planned - from the layout of the winding roads to the colors of the houses to the successful lives its residents will go on to lead. And no one embodies this spirit more than Elena Richardson, whose guiding principle is playing by the rules. Enter Mia Warren - an enigmatic artist and single mother - who arrives in this idyllic bubble with her teenage daughter, Pearl, and rents a house from the Richardsons.

Another riveting story
Revisado: 08-12-18
I tried to describe Ms. Ng's books to a friend who is not into fiction. Thriller, suspense? Literature gone into a dark helix, wrapping back to it's nexus, dumping you back at the beginning? My mind is whirlwinded by her writing.
I don't want to give too much away in a review but if you enjoy stories that hook you immediately, build out of something tiny (a tiny fire?) and wrap your whole imagination up then give this book a listen.

Historia
When Michael Pollan set out to research how LSD and psilocybin (the active ingredient in magic mushrooms) are being used to provide relief to people suffering from difficult-to-treat conditions such as depression, addiction, and anxiety, he did not intend to write what is undoubtedly his most personal book. But upon discovering how these remarkable substances are improving the lives not only of the mentally ill but also of healthy people coming to grips with the challenges of everyday life, he decided to explore the landscape of the mind in the first person as well as the third.

A change is a coming
Revisado: 08-12-18
As a long-time worker in substance abuse, I've been reading on ANYTHING that might improve the field. 30% success rate is the best stat we have in recovery and that isn't even across the board. (Usually worse). I had heard and seen some of the initial studies coming out about psychedelics helping with depression and anxiety and possibly alcoholism.
This book is really well-researched. Michael Pollen keeps it well-grounded, not giving into flights of fantasies in unknown possibilities or the mystic surrounding psychedelics. I truly enjoyed it on a personal level and see some hope for the field in the coming years.

Historia
America has been the world leader in generating new mental health treatments and modern theories of the human psyche. We export our psychopharmaceuticals packaged with the certainty that our biomedical knowledge will relieve the suffering and stigma of mental illness. We categorize disorders, thereby defining mental illness and health, and then parade these seemingly scientific certainties in front of the world.

Excellent breakdown of how mental irregularities are displayed in different cultures. Last part of the book details how companies profit off of exporting the American DSM definition of mental illnesses

excellent for keeping you awake and squirming
Revisado: 07-26-15
from the first sentence to the last this book and the talented narrator build a bridge, piece by piece, until the whole amazing span is finished. a couple, one who should have been a ground-breaking doctor and her husband, challenging perspective by simply being a Chinese American in an almost all white town/university bring all their baggage into their marriage and hence to their children.
it made me squirm with the family and society expectations and pressure this family feels, deals with and NEVER talks about. (pretty realistic!)

Gave my print copy to my sister after buying it based on first chapter. Very glad it worked out so I have listened to it instead. Adiche's description and dialogue put me right there in church or subway or cafe. Thoughts all of us who don't wear the Right look or don't wear it well will connect with the observations, experiences and feelings this book lays out.
Race, foreigness and culture shock on the coming and returning give this story so much to think and feel.
the reading was also amazing.
