Historia
"I’m James Taylor and I’m a professional autobiographer", says the celebrated folk singer at the start of this tender audio memoir. Through decades of music by one of the best-selling musicians of all time, who created classics like "Fire and Rain" and "Carolina in My Mind", James Taylor has doled out his history in the poetry of his work. Taylor says his early life is, "the source of many of my songs", and Break Shot is a tour of his first 21 years in rich, new detail.

Historia
From the United States and Britain to continental Europe and beyond, liberal democracy is under siege, while authoritarianism is on the rise. In Twilight of Democracy, Anne Applebaum, an award-winning historian of Soviet atrocities who was one of the first American journalists to raise an alarm about antidemocratic trends in the West, explains the lure of nationalism and autocracy. In this captivating essay, she contends that political systems with radically simple beliefs are inherently appealing, especially when they benefit the loyal to the exclusion of everyone else.

Excellent; Provocative
Revisado: 07-17-22
Where do multi-cultural, multi-ethnic governments go “now”? This is an excellent perspective-written by an American right-of-center journalist who has lived in Europe, and particularly Poland where her husband is a National right-of-center politician, looking at the pendulum swings of national politics and political sentiment in (in decreasing attention from the author), Poland, Hungary, Germany, France, the UK and US; how autocratic sentiments get energy, support politicians and movements, and threaten democracy.

Historia
When Browder’s young Russian lawyer, Sergei Magnitsky, was beaten to death in a Moscow jail in 2009, Browder cast aside his business career and made it his life’s mission to pursue justice for Sergei. One of the first steps of that mission was to uncover who had killed Sergei and profited from the $230 million corruption scheme that he had exposed. As Browder and his team tracked the money that flowed out of Russia—through the Baltics and Cyprus and on to Western Europe and the Americas—they discovered that Vladimir Putin himself was one of the beneficiaries of the crime.

Historia
NASA is about to launch Apollo 18. While the mission has been billed as a scientific one, flight controller Kazimieras "Kaz" Zemeckis knows there is a darker objective. Intelligence has discovered a secret Soviet space station spying on America, and Apollo 18 may be the only chance to stop it. But as Kaz races to keep the NASA crew one step ahead of their Russian rivals, a deadly accident reveals that not everyone involved is who they were thought to be. With political stakes stretched to the breaking point, the White House and the Kremlin can only watch as their astronauts collide.

Engaging, almost to the end
Revisado: 10-21-21
This is an enjoyable book; lots of info for anyone interested in space missions and, until the end, good character development. BUT, almost at the end (no spoilers here), one of the main characters “exits left”, too abruptly and without much said about that person’s “thereafter”. After so much detail of said person’s inner and outer life, this makes no sense.

Narrator is really awful
Revisado: 08-08-21
Granted, this is a very dry and boring subject-and probably this book should not have been converted to the spoken word, in any event, but if one is going to plunge ahead, anyhow, at least get a competent narrator. And AUDIBLE-you would do well to pay to have the audio edited before releasing it.
For instance, the written text (and narrator) state that the DASH Diet (“DD”) was first formulated in 1992 and then, when reading about what has transpired in terms of recognition of its efficacy in 2017 (approx), says “30 decade.
Further, his pronunciation of some words is really weird!

Menachem Kaiser’s brilliantly told story, woven from improbable events and profound revelations, is set in motion when the author takes up his Holocaust-survivor grandfather’s former battle to reclaim the family’s apartment building in Sosnowiec, Poland. Soon, he is on a circuitous path to encounters with the long-time residents of the building, and with a Polish lawyer known as “The Killer.” A surprise discovery leads to Kaiser being adopted as a virtual celebrity by a band of Silesian treasure seekers who revere the memoir as the indispensable guidebook to Nazi plunder.

Enjoyable but tiresome
Revisado: 04-04-21
An interesting story, fact & fiction, reality and memory and wishful thinking. It should and could have been edited savagely without compromising anything: Instead of writing (and I paraphrase): “Abraham was dealing with fact, memory, uncertainty; Gretchen was dealing with fact, memory, uncertainty; “X” was dealing with ...”, which really lost impact, better: Abraham, Gretchen, X, all dealing with their myopic facts, memory, uncertainty”... this style of trying to show how universal that particular experience or mental state was, by repetition, itself is used multiple times and wears very thin...

The Not-So Obvious Ending
Revisado: 12-12-20
Funny and tragic story; what can possibly go wrong with well-intentioned and ill-informed foreign aid? This story could have taken place in almost any third-world county, and without too much effort certain aspects could have been changed—but the ending would be the same. Dave Eggers has a policy position, but it is very subtle and best seen across various books.

Historia
It’s 2011, and Samuel Andresen-Anderson—college professor, stalled writer—has a Nix of his own: his mother, Faye. He hasn’t seen her in decades, not since she abandoned the family when he was a boy. Now she’s re-appeared, having committed an absurd crime that electrifies the nightly news, beguiles the internet, and inflames a politically divided country. The media paints Faye as a radical hippie with a sordid past, but as far as Samuel knows, his mother was an ordinary girl who married her high-school sweetheart.

"Oh, what a tangled web we weave..."
Revisado: 09-28-16
Initially, I wasn't very enthused with either the story line or the narrator. But after about 45 minutes, I warmed up to both--then the narrator totally fit the book, and the story became more complex and interesting, and it held my interest throughout (except it seemed to drag a bit just before the end). Definitely recommend!
