Historia
Earth in 2064 is politically corrupt and in economic decline. The Long Depression has dragged on for 56 years, and the Bureau of Sustainable Research is hard at work making sure no new technologies disrupt the planned economy. Ten years ago, a band of malcontents, dreamers, and libertarian radicals bolted privately developed antigravity drives onto rusty seagoing cargo ships, loaded them to the gills with 20th-century tunnel-boring machines and earthmoving equipment, and set sail - for the moon.

John Galt on the Moon
Revisado: 08-24-20
Libertarians somehow learn to cooperate enough to build spaceships and flee to the moon, where they establish a colony independent of Earth governments. Of course, some of the contradictions and shortcomings of libertarianism manifest themselves, although the author seems to prefer those problems to the problems of our current governments.
It's an engaging story, well written, and fun. The first book (and maybe all of them) end with a cliff-hanger, so be prepared to be unsatisfied until you get the next book.
Spaceships, romance, stupid college kids, talking dogs - what more could a fan want?
If you like the SF genre, you will almost certainly like this series.

More Psycho-babble
Revisado: 01-19-20
Another book claiming that the universe has intention, that people are "frequencies," (whatever that means), and that objects only exist when we look at them. This has already been done, and it wasn't true then, either.
It's read too fast, with many stumbles, making it even more unpleasant to listen to.

Historia
Everything you know is about to change. Victoria Brie is getting her life together. She may be just a cashier, but she has big dreams and high hopes for what comes next. In the meantime, she has everything that matters: her family and her best friend. If only life were that simple. When she comes home to find her parents murdered by an elf — yeah, an elf — she’s thrust into a world of magic, mystery, and a madman who wants her dead. The question is… why? Merged with a powerful artifact created by an evil mastermind, Victoria is hunted, stabbed, burned, shot, and attacked in the street… but she’s a survivor, damn it, and no one’s taking her out. She falls in love with the magical underground city of Fairhaven, and when the elf who assassinated her parents comes after her new home, she not taking any prisoners. This series is an enchanting urban fantasy saga with sarcastic ogres, wise-cracking wizards, and a brutally addictive full-contact sport called Berserk. Your only regret will be not starting it sooner.

Juvenile
Revisado: 01-05-20
The main characters are two air-headed teen girls who never say a smart thing. The dialog is boring and uninspired. The plot, such as it is, seems incidental to the book. The idea that there is a hidden world full of magic right nearby is intriguing, but it isn't very well developed. It never feels real.
I get the feeling the authors got paid by the swear word.

Not What I Expected
Revisado: 01-02-20
I thought this would be dry but informative. It turned out to be a great and inspiring story, taking the listener on a ride through the twists and turns of the growth and awareness of several people. It reads more like fiction, with plot twists, character development, and a new experience always just around the corner. The narrator really brought it to life.

A Long, Very Long, Sermon
Revisado: 02-10-19
It started out OK, with some interesting stories and aphorisms about how to organize your life, but bogged down when it became a turgid religious tract. He talks a great deal about "God," (which he pronounces, "gawd" - I don't know, maybe it's a Canadian thing), but never defines the concept or provides evidence for the existence of a god. There's lots of word salad, with psychological and philosophical terms tossed into Bible quotes, rendering them even more meaningless than they are on their own.
There are many contradictions, like "Make never telling a lie an unchangeable goal of your life," and then a couple of sentences later, "Never have an unchangeable goal for your life." He talks a lot about truth but never defines it, and depends on shades of meaning of terms to hide his logical fallacies.
I didn't find much of value.

Sounds Suspicious to Me
Revisado: 01-20-19
The book convinced me that the only good thing Donald Trump has done in two years as President is firing James Comey.
There are a couple of interesting vignettes, especially about his early life, but mostly it's stuff that's already been discussed over and over in the public domain. The purpose of the book appears to provide cover for Comey's disastrous decisions, not to inform or entertain. Here and there, he makes reference to something interesting, but provides no information because the rest is classified.
If you've been following the news for the last two years, you don't need to read this book.

Historia
This new translation of Clarice Lispector's sensational first book tells the story of a middle class woman's life from childhood through an unhappy marriage and its dissolution to transcendence. Near to the Wild Heart, published in Rio de Janeiro in 1943, introduced Brazil to what one writer called "Hurricane Clarice": a 23-year-old girl who wrote her first book in a tiny rented room and then baptized it with a title taken from Joyce.

Mental Onanism

Word salad about a young woman coming to believe literally that her solipsistic viewpoint is real. She waxes ecstatic describing the difference between things that exist, as opposed to things that just are. Didn't do anything for me.
