Historia
Five years after The Final Day, the Republic of New America has all but collapsed into regional powers and the world at large is struggling to remain stable as regional conflicts ravage the post EMP landscape. After several years attempting to lead a quiet life, John Matherson receives the news that the President is dying from a possible assassination attempt, and is asked to step in to negotiate with what appears to be a new military power hidden in the wreckage of the world. Pulled back into the fray, John struggles to hold the tottering Republic together.

EXPOSITION
Revisado: 08-21-24
Characters spend the entire time explaining every little thing to each other. They don’t do anything except ask questions. Show, don’t tell! Don’t have characters just sit in rooms explaining everything. Go DO SOMETHING! Boring!

Historia
Already cited on the floor of Congress and discussed in the corridors of the Pentagon as a book all Americans should read, One Second After is the story of a war scenario that could become all too terrifyingly real. Based upon a real weapon - the Electro Magnetic Pulse (EMP) - which may already be in the hands of our enemies, it is a truly realistic look at the awesome power of a weapon that can destroy the entire United States.

Interesting Read, Characters Blah
Revisado: 08-06-24
It is an interesting look at what might happen if the power went down on all forms of electronics. The problem with this book is that it’s almost all exposition. Characters asking each other “What do you mean?” “That wouldn’t happen, would it?” Then another character taking 15 minutes to explain everything. Nothing really happens. Things are explained to have happened, but until the end, nothing happens in real time. I thought the main character would go on a quest to find medication or something. He just hunkers down and thinks back on previous wars. Reflects on how it all feels like a movie. And why are all the character names so similar? Jen, Jenny, Ginger?

Historia
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

Nice Start to the Series
Revisado: 11-15-20
This book kept me interested. I generally liked the characters. It’s kind of like an Equalizer meets Indians Jones. By that, I mean a loner who helps people, lives in New York, has friends and family, but there are super natural elements to the story. It’s handled very much like Indiana Jones - it’s based on legend, Jack doesn’t believe it until it’s shoved in his face, and then he handles it as best he can. The super natural pieces aren’t necessarily the focus, just a tool for the antagonist to use to achieve his goals. I’m definitely listening to the next one.

Not Enough Action
Revisado: 10-03-20
Book kind of meanders around. Almost has two plots. I think the first plot is there just to establish where Rapp is at with his personal life, career, and show why the president needs him. Then he gets caught up in the second plot, but that one never pays off. He doesn’t stop the bad guys. Boring.

Historia
Ex-military policeman Jack Reacher is a drifter. He’s just passing through Margrave, Georgia, and in less than an hour, he’s arrested for murder. Not much of a welcome. All Reacher knows is that he didn’t kill anybody. At least not here. Not lately. But he doesn’t stand a chance of convincing anyone. Not in Margrave, Georgia. Not a chance in hell.

Too Many Coincidences and the Narrator
Revisado: 09-03-20
Book is extremely slow. Reecher is constantly explaining things to other characters that have already been explained to him, so as the reader, we don’t need to hear it again. So much detail about every little thing. This book could lose 25% of the detail and dialogue and be so much better. And then too many easy things happen for Reecher so he can connect the dots. Less than a third of the way in and there are eight murders in this small town. It’s over the top. Reminded me of like a long boring episode of some 80s action TV show. There’s no stakes, no drama, just Reecher going around explaining things or having someone explain things to him. And why does the author add in “Right?” At the end of every sentence of dialogue and “OK,” at the beginning of every sentence. Narrator sounded really old and tired all the time. I don’t care too much about that, but made a boring read even harder to listen to. I’m guessing the books get better because everyone raves about them, but this was bad. Don’t know how the series is still going after a debut dud like this.

A Great "One Off" for Dave and Clete
Revisado: 08-18-20
I thoroughly enjoyed this story. It's set about 20 years ago, when Helen is first made sheriff and Dave gets his shield back. The whole thing almost felt like a "fan fiction" story as it has a ton of action with Dave and Clete and not a ton from side characters (which at times for me really slows the story down) and fully embraces the religious overtones and manifestations of evil. Dave is a haunted guy -- Vietnam, his mother, his father's death, three dead wives -- and he's always struggled with manifestations of those memories. This book goes all in on that theme, making it all real, questioning the idea of time as a linear and set. It still feels like a James Lee Burke novel, but I understand how the elements of religious 'fantasy' might throw some people off. Enjoy the story for what it is, a well crafted novel! Five stars all the WAY! Bust 'em or dust 'em, noble mon!

Bland and Amos Changed Too Much
Revisado: 07-28-20
I liked the first book, there were stakes, Amos was somewhat interesting, kind of saw where it was going with the characters, but looked forward to this book. Very disappointed. Amos has a very different personality even though the author keeps telling the reader that he’s still the same. He’s constantly making small jokes and showing genuine emotions. Too dramatic of a shift from the last book. Another character is accused of murdering his parents and locked up for 20 years, nearly executed, and he’s totally normal first day out of prison?? Not a chance. Guy would be a wreck. Then all the side characters are just there to say things so that Amos doesn’t do all the talking. They dont add anything to the story. It was pretty boring. Zero stakes. Everything just fell into place. I do appreciate how the author took on some things like racism and the prison system, but I don’t recommend this book.

Historia
Thirty years ago, Wilde was found as a boy living feral in the woods, with no memory of his past. Now an adult, he still doesn't know where he comes from, and another child has gone missing. No one seems to take Naomi Pine's disappearance seriously, not even her father - with one exception. Hester Crimstein, a television criminal attorney, knows through her grandson that Naomi was relentlessly bullied at school. Hester asks Wilde - with whom she shares a tragic connection - to use his unique skills to help find Naomi.

Great characters, decent story
Revisado: 07-10-20
My first Coben novel. Great characters, started strong, but kind of meandered around. I’m guessing it might mean more if I’d read other books by him. Hope he turns it into a series.

I’ve read all the books leading up to this one. It’s the weakest in my opinion. Nothing really happens to break things up or add any tension.
