Interesting, folksy, hilarious!
Revisado: 01-02-23
I’ve always been interested in the history of ghost towns and bought this on a whim. Glad I did! Well researched and detailed Jolene’s enthusiasm reanimates people and town that have been gone a long time. The funny, purposely bad sound effects caught me off guard at first, but made me burst of laughing a few times. How she keeps a straight face I’ll never know.
I was disappointed to finish these episodes. I wish there were more!

Historia
Finding and identifying a pirate ship is the hardest thing to do under the sea. But two men—John Chatterton and John Mattera—are willing to risk everything to find the Golden Fleece, the ship of the infamous pirate Joseph Bannister. At large during the Golden Age of Piracy in the seventeenth century, Bannister should have been immortalized in the lore of the sea—his exploits more notorious than Blackbeard’s, more daring than Kidd’s. But his story, and his ship, have been lost to time.

Middle age, real Pirates, History and Treasure Hunting.
Revisado: 05-02-18
I saw this book and grabbed it on a whim. It appeared to be a light, moderately interesting story of rich Guy treasure hunters. Wrong!
This book scratched at the wistful curiosity and thrill seeking that we lost as we grew up. Pirates, weapons, history, adventure, mystery, struggle, treasure and life are woven into a tale that will leave you thirsting for more.
I’d write more but too many specifics would ruin it for you. Satisfy your middle age wanderlust. Read this.

Historia
As a boy in the 1890s he went looking for thrills in a rural Georgia that still burned with humiliation from the Civil War. As an old man in the 1960s he dared death, picked fights, refused to take his medicine, and drove off all his friends and admirers. He went to his deathbed alone, clutching a loaded pistol and a bag containing millions of dollars worth of cash and securities. During the years in between, he became, according to Al Stump, "the most shrewd, inventive, lurid, detested, mysterious, and superb of all baseball players." He was Ty Cobb. In Cobb, Stump tells how he was given a fascinating window into the Georgia Peach's life and times when the dying Cobb hired him in 1960 to ghostwrite his autobiography.

What a man -- what a book!

Think you know Ty Cobb?
Revisado: 12-09-17
I did too. I didn't. Nor did I really have a flavor for the beginnings of Major League Baseball. Al Stump's book not only gives a balanced look at Cobb but it also details other interesting aspects of early baseball, from equipment and style to greedy owners (like today). Any baseball fan should read this.

Riveting!!!
Revisado: 04-10-17
I don't travel, have little experience with other countries and had no reason to listen to this other than the thought that I knew little about the history of the most populous country in the world.
I admit I procrastinated listening to this. It just seemed like it was going to be drudgery. WRONG! Fascinating. These lectures explain much about our view of China, as well as why they developed how they did. At the end of each chapter I couldn't wait to start the next. Professor Baum delivers the material like a storyteller. He's captivating. The names are rough but I found myself repeating them out loud in the car as I enjoyed the lecture. It's almost like a friend is telling you about China. It clears up many misapprehensions we have about China. I was sad we
when I finished.
HIGHLY recommended.

Historia
In 1528, a mission set out from Spain to colonize Florida. But the expedition went horribly wrong: Delayed by a hurricane, knocked off course by a colossal error of navigation, and ultimately doomed by a disastrous decision to separate the men from their ships, the mission quickly became a desperate journey of survival. Of the 300 men who had embarked on the journey, only four survived - three Spaniards and an African slave.

I'd been interested in this historical adventure since I'd heard it years ago. The author is careful to place the story in historical context. He takes time to fill gaps in the adventure with possibilities. The improbable historically true adventure borders on being unbelievable.
