Historia
John Bachelor is the saddest kind of spy: not a joe in the field, not even a desk jockey, but a milkman - a part-time pension administrator whose main job is to check in on aging retired spies. Late in his career and having lost his wife, his house, and his savings after a series of unlucky choices, John's been living in a dead man's London apartment, hoping the bureaucracy isn't going to catch up with him and leave him homeless. But keeping a secret among spies is a fool's errand, and now John has made himself eminently blackmailable.

Compelling story that continues the tale of John Bachelor, a spy so bad he doesn’t even warrant being a Slow Horse

Historia
The fifth book in the NYT best-selling Expanse series, Nemesis Games drives the crew of the Rocinante apart, and as they struggle to survive, the inner planets fall victim to an enemy's catastrophic plan. A thousand worlds have opened, and the greatest land rush in human history has begun. As wave after wave of colonists leave, the power structures of the old solar system begin to buckle. Ships are disappearing without a trace. Private armies are being secretly formed. The sole remaining protomolecule sample is stolen.

If you enjoyed the series, read the books
Revisado: 06-10-24
Sometimes watching a series ruins the books, this is not at all the case with the Expanse. There is so much more to the books than the tv series, and I loved the tv series.
This volume is, perhaps, the best example of that, particularly when it comes to Naomi. Aspects of the character that made no sense on the screen, come to life here and make her one of the best, most complex characters in the series.

Historia
The sun is bloated, diseased, dying perhaps. Beneath its baneful light, Shadrapar, last of all cities, harbours fewer than 100,000 human souls. Built on the ruins of countless civilisations, Shadrapar is a museum, a midden, an asylum, a prison on a world that is ever more alien to humanity. Bearing witness to the desperate struggle for existence between life old and new is Stefan Advani: rebel, outlaw, prisoner, survivor.

Historia
My name is Gary Rendell. I'm an astronaut. When they asked me as a kid what I wanted to be when I grew up, I said, "astronaut, please!" I dreamed astronaut, I worked astronaut, I studied astronaut. I got lucky; when a probe exploring the Oort Cloud found a strange alien rock and an international team of scientists was put together to go and look at it, I made the draw. I got even luckier. When disaster hit and our team was split up, scattered through the endless cold tunnels, I somehow survived. Now I'm lost, and alone, and scared, and there's something horrible in here. Lucky me.

I cannot believe I had this so long in my list without listening to it. Everything that science fiction can be. There is much to be said about it, but I fear giving spoilers so I will just say listen or read. It’s worth it.

The Reaper is a legend, more myth than man: the savior of worlds, the leader of the Rising, the breaker of chains. But the Reaper is also Darrow, born of the red soil of Mars: a husband, a father, a friend. The worlds once needed the Reaper. But now they need Darrow. Because after the dark age will come a new age: of light, of victory, of hope.

Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Remarkably well written, great characters and beautiful plot
Revisado: 07-17-23
Really, this may well be one of my favorite books. It is a tale of the dark reality of abandoned rural America told with an authentic and appealing voice. At times hysterical, at times grim, the story pulls you through a world that is seldom depicted in literature with a narrative that you won’t want to put down.
If you were ever tempted by Dickens, but found his 19th century style impenetrable, this is the perfect novel for you.

Historia
The passionate and tragic story of Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff is one of the high points of 19th-century Romantic literature. In the relationship of Cathy and Heathcliff, and in the wild, bleak Yorkshire Moors of its setting, Wuthering Heights creates a world of its own, conceived with a disregard for convention and an instinct for poetry and the darkest depths of the human soul in torment.

Well narrated version of the classic tale of woe
Revisado: 05-31-23
This was a very well narrated version of the classic work. As for the story itself, while some complain of the lack of heroic characters, I feel the skill of Emily Brontë shows in her ability to tell a tale that keeps you engaged despite the likability of its characters.

Historia
Pell's Station, orbiting the alien world simply called Downbelow, had always managed to remain neutral in the ever escalating conflict between The Company, whose fleets from Earth had colonized space, and its increasingly independent and rebellious colony worlds. But Pell's location - - on the outer edge of Earth's defensive perimeter - makes her the focal point in the titanic battle of colony worlds fighting for independence.

Great War story
Revisado: 05-20-23
This is a tale that tells of war in an occupied territory, and the story of those who live through it as civilians. It reads smoothly and well with compelling characters.
The only reason I don’t give it a five star review is that it plays into the good hearted noble savage trope, which Cherryh avoids in her later works. That os an artifact of the period it was written in, however, and as such can be ignored.

This is truly epic
Revisado: 05-02-23
This is, perhaps the most moving episode yet, and it has inspired me to finally write a review.
The depth and emotion shared by the narrator as he continues his Sysiphian reading of these timeless classics is truly moving.
