I love Haven's Rock and their isolated town. I love the dynamics and the interactions between the various characters, like a really big locked room mystery. I can never guess the killer, but like a british mystery Casey always ends up being the

He is the best at multiple character voices; all the different people and cultures were distinct from one another, though I wished I had a map during parts of it. the only bad thing about an audiobook is you can't autograph it!

this is my second or third run through the Dresden series, so evidently I like it enough to re-listen to them. what strikes me is that he is so judgmental about how people live their lives, despite being on the fringes of 'acceptable ' himself. his mentor didn't tell him everything so he'll never trust him. that is just childish. parents often tell their children to do things they don't do. 'don't smoke' even if I do. He doesn't approve of Thomas's feeding even though that is necessary for his survival. he's trying to eat from willing donor's and not harm them. Justine was mentally traumatized without his feeding, and he loves her. what's wrong with that?

I love all Ms. Maguire's books and feel she writes a strong narrative. I was a trifle underwhelmed by the first few chapters; dominic was so clearly her HEA that their dithering about it slowed the narrative for me. however, once the action starts it really starts and she can write action, and even torture so viscerally that I found it painful, even though she doesn't get anywhere near the grisly details. she says just enough to draw you in and make it easier to hate the covenant of St. George. They do evoke the Inquisition in their excuse for being inhumane in the defense of humanity.

Ian is one of my favorite characters and I like Verity a lot more now she isnt a PTSD suffering demigod in fear of her own powers. She has a complete right to have PTSD; its surprising that more vampires dont have it given the lives (undeaths) they lead. The dual personality and arguing with herself just got to be a tad much. and as for why her sire didnt give her cain's legacy- given the age it's just as likely he only wanted it to go to his Male children, which Ian should have hypothesized. My only frustration really with the book is that the set up to the third book seems a bit contrived. how did Asaiel know so much about her if her identity is secret? still a good book, but not my favorite.

I wasnt sure I would like the dueling narrators, but I think that Jonathan Davis adds to Amanda's narration nicely. I spent the whole book trying to figure out what kind of shifter Lia's boss was and that was a fun incidental mystery. Most shifter mythos don't have prey species in it, and I liked how Lia has prey characteristics but is by no means a wimp. Anyone who has ever seen deer in rut or defending themselves against attackers knows that deer aren't pushovers.

I wasnt in love with this protagonist; a wolf should have more self assurance IMHO even when going against her culture. And I thought her parents were a little too 'one note' self absorbed. But having been the child who went against cultural expectations and had a life beyond what "ought to be" I liked the development of her family of heart. I always love Amanda Ronconi's voice acting and she gave me so much joy.

Fledgling and the first novel Changeling, had me sipping tea and attempting proper English diction. The first novel was a bit better placed than the second; it seems a little unrealistic to assume after one year of school shes ready to go out on her own and risk what was already a fragile place in society. Still, the friendship between the girls and their genuine desire to do the right thing was lovely. The plot was somewhat predictable in the way that young adult novels often are, but it was still charming and just what I needed during a snow day.

if Jane Austin had written modern fantasy, she would have written a delightful book like this. Amanda Ronconi as always hits the perfect notes for her characters and I can't wait to find out what happens next; though I hope she doesnt rush it. Too much of a rush to enliven the plot can ruin a comedy of manners, just as being too aggressive can ruin a cake.

if you haven't read The Dispatcher, read it first. it will help you understand this story better. this is about 2 years after the Dispatcher and Tony finds himself down on his luck and reluctantly agrees to get involved in a "grey area" deal, which gets him involved in a series of dark events and accused of murder. As always, Scalzi turns the murder mystery genre on his head and asks the question "how do you murder someone if murder is no longer possible? "
