Historia
Solenne Bonet lives in Texas where choice no longer exists. An algorithm determines a Black woman’s occupation, spouse, and residence. Solenne finds solace in penning the biography of Henriette, an ancestor who’d been an enslaved concubine to a wealthy planter in 1800s Louisiana. But history repeats itself when Solenne, lonely and naïve, finds herself entangled with Bastien Martin, a high-ranking government official. Solenne finds the psychological bond unbearable, so she considers alternatives. With Henriette as her guide, she must decide whether and how to leave behind all she knows.

Incredible, wrenching story
Revisado: 03-10-24
This is one that will keep you on the edge of your seat and make you rethink our society. My only criticism is that the reader sometimes mispronounces some words and accents some of the dialogue oddly, but would say you could count those moments on one hand. They in no way diminish the impact of the story. A must-read, in my opinion.

Historia
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

What an admirable memoir. McCurdy is so open and transparent in telling her story. Heartbreaking and yet inspiring with its realness.

Historia
On a cool June evening in 2009, after performing a concert at London's Royal Academy of Music, 20-year-old American flautist Edwin Rist boarded a train for a suburban outpost of the British Museum of Natural History. Home to one of the largest ornithological collections in the world, the Tring museum was full of rare bird specimens whose gorgeous feathers were worth staggering amounts of money to the men who shared Edwin's obsession: the Victorian art of salmon fly-tying. Once inside the museum, the champion fly-tier grabbed hundreds of bird skins - some collected 150 years earlier.

Fascinating and frustrating
Revisado: 08-25-23
Excellent in every way— well researched and expertly written. This is a perfect example of narrative nonfiction at its best. My only small frustration is that the narrator imitates the accents of the people in the story, which feels a little offensive. That said, it didn’t bother me enough to diminish my rating. Wonderful book.

I couldn’t stop listening
Revisado: 08-18-23
This book is ridiculous in so many ways, and yet I couldn’t put it down. The story is pretty trashy, moves way too fast, is full of unnecessary adverbs, and is read by a guy who regularly misplaces the word stress in the dialogue. But, despite the flaws, it still did a decent job of scratching the forbidden romance itch. So there you go.

Historia
From the internationally bestselling author of No god but God comes a fascinating, provocative, and meticulously researched biography that challenges long-held assumptions about the man we know as Jesus of Nazareth. Sifting through centuries of mythmaking, Reza Aslan sheds new light on one of history's most influential and enigmatic characters by examining Jesus through the lens of the tumultuous era in which he lived: first-century Palestine, an age awash in apocalyptic fervor.

Gripping retelling of how historical Christianity became contemporary Christianity
Revisado: 07-29-23
Aslan decodes centuries of complicated historical and mythological accounts of Christianity to provide a compelling explanation of how Historical Jesus became Jesus Christ, which he argues are not the same being. I personally have always struggled with the modern church’s attachment to Paul and have long thought Paul and Jesus often incompatible, but lacked the historical insight to explain my position. Aslan gets straight to the heart of the matter. Very satisfying book that will definitely make you think and still leaves room for your own faith connections. Definitely for thinkers.

Un-put-down-able
Revisado: 07-24-23
I generally am more of a Jane Austen kind of romance reader, but I thought the set was a good bargain. Even though they are racier than my typical reading, I enjoyed them thoroughly. Even my young daughter, who was only allowed to hear the innocent parts, was addicted and wanted to know what happened next. She’s almost 4. That never happens with my usual audiobooks. Great characters and great performances make up for some very anachronistic language and scenarios. Worth the credit, in my opinion.

Historia
Everyone knows Benjamin Franklin—the thrifty inventor-statesman of the Revolutionary era—but not about his love life. Poor Richard’s Women reveals the neglected voices of the women Ben loved and lost during his lifelong struggle between passion and prudence. The most prominent among them was Deborah Read Franklin, his common-law wife and partner for 44 years. Long dismissed by historians, she was an independent, politically savvy woman and devoted wife who raised their children, managed his finances, and fought off angry mobs at gunpoint while he traipsed about England.

Great story about an amazing woman
Revisado: 07-06-23
I found this book after reading about Eliza in Cokie Roberts’ book Founding Mothers. As a Carolinian I knew the name but not the history, and the brief chapter on Eliza in Roberts’ book caught my imagination. This novel, based so closely on the known facts of Eliza’s life and so richly told fit the bill— even though I had read her letters and knew her story beforehand, I still held my breath at every turn. Very satisfying tale.
