For fans of A Street Cat Named Bob and Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World, Strays is a compelling true story of a man who rescues a stray, injured cat and how they save each other. Homeless, alcoholic, and depressed, Michael King lives in a UPS loading bay on the wrong side of the tracks in Portland, Oregon. One rainy night, he stumbles upon a hurt, starving, scruffy cat and takes her in.

I thought this was a well-written and very touching story. It demonstrates that we all need to love and be loved, no matter what our life circumstances are. Great narration, too

In her short decade in Hollywood, Jean Harlow created a new genre of movie star - her fans idolized her for her peerless image, her beautiful body, and her gorgeous façade. Harlow in Hollywood is the story of how a town and an industry created her, a story that's never been told before. In this book, renowned Harlow expert Darrell Rooney and Hollywood historian Mark Vieira team up to present the most beautiful - and accurate - book on Harlow ever produced.

Mostly very good
Revisado: 10-04-23
I enjoyed this for what it was, a quick listen and nice overview of the life and career of Jean Harlow. The narrator was adequate much of the time, but her characterization of Jean's voice was inconsistent. It's as though she couldn't decide which accent Jean spoke in, so she gave Jean all of them. New York City honk, southern belle, Midwestern flat...they're all there.

Not enough Karen
Revisado: 05-30-23
This is a decent book if you're looking for a chronicle of the group The Carpenters. I can't recommend it as a solid biography of Karen Carpenter, however. She seems to be a shadowy background figure throughout the book, with no real insight of who Karen Carpenter was as a human being. Far too many extraneous details are thrown in, which seems to be the author's attempt to pad the book, and ends up making this a far too long and quite boring listen. I was rather disappointed.

Acclaimed author Peg Kehret has written the true story of the year when she was twelve and stricken with polio. At first paralyzed and terrified, she fought her way to recovery, aided by doctors and therapists, a loving family, supportive roommates fighting their own battles with the disease, and plenty of grit and luck. With the humor and suspense that are her trademarks, Peg Kehret vividly recreates a year of heartbreak and triumph.

Historia
Imagine never being able to close your eyes and remember the feel of your mother’s arms wrapped around you. Now imagine closing your eyes and remembering your mother’s tears splashing down on your face as she is on top of you, crying as she is trying to choke you to death. My mother left me these memories and many more during my traumatic childhood. After many years of struggling with trying to understand "Why me?" I took back control of my life and started saying, "It was me, now what am I going to do?" The answer is my book, "Why Me?"

Devastating
Revisado: 03-02-23
It was absolutely horrendous what this child endured at at the hands of her mother and step-father. Thankfully she was able to finally escape and become a much better human than her mother could ever dream of being. Yes, the N word is heard in this story a few times, but put it into the context that this is one of the many offensive insults hurled at this girl on a regular basis by her own mother. Also remember this little girl was also regularly beaten, emotionally abused in the most horrific ways, and denied any love whatsoever. Yes, it's an offensive word, but ask yourself if you still feel offended by hearing a word, considering what this woman had to endure her entire childhood.

Historia
Greg Donahue’s The Minuteman, tells the story of one of Newark’s native sons; ex-prizefighter and longtime Zwillman enforcer Sidney Abramowitz, a.k.a. Nat Arno, who took over leadership of the Minutemen in 1934 and made it his personal business to put an end to what he saw as the Bund’s “anti-American” activities. For six years, Arno and his crew of vigilantes battled Newark’s Nazis at every turn. The Minuteman is a story of the ethics of violence in the face of fascism; a forgotten legacy that is as relevant now as it was nearly a hundred years ago.

A fascinating look at a part of our history that I wasn't aware of. Like many other reviewers, I felt that the Antifa reference was completely unnecessary and probably did more harm than good. The narrator was excellent and kept me interested from start to finish.

Engaging and enjoyable story
Revisado: 11-26-22
I really enjoyed this audiobook. I could relate to the author's memories of her childhood since I grew up in the same era, and in the same general area. I now live where her mother grew up and it was fun hearing the description of how people lived here in the 1950s. However, the narrator was rather distracting. Her voice is clear and strong, but her approach was a bit pretentious and off-putting. Considering this story is in the first person, her performance should have been less posh East Coast, and more working-class Michigan.

Fascinating peek
Revisado: 11-17-21
I found this book to be a fascinating view into the mind of a musical genius. Just how much of this is Brian's own words has been debated, and Brian himself admits he doesn't always tell the truth. It's best to approach this book as a long and meandering, although enjoyable conversation with a friend that you're comfortable hanging out with. Don't expect it to be strictly linear and chronological because it doesn't have to be. Brian expresses repeatedly that it's not how his creative process works. It's also helpful to have a good working knowledge of Brian's history and background before diving into this. The narrator does a great job of tying everything together.
