But her family history is full of gaps, bloodlines cut short, family ties all ending in knots. When a picture of Faye – dirty and dishevelled, stumbling alone on the moors – goes viral, her life is thrown into chaos. Faye is convinced she is not that person in the photograph. But how can she be sure?

Genuinely excellent book. Thoroughly appreciated it.
Revisado: 03-24-25
I suppose one could classify this novel in multiple ways—e.g. literature; historical fiction; detective novel; murder mystery; thriller (*a bit of a stretch to classify it as such, IMHO): drama.
For the following reasons, I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook: (a) Intriguing and substantive plot, subplots, narrative histories, and overall story; (b) Competent historical research due diligence and knowledge; (c) Solid grasp and skilled use of grammar and composition; (d) Excellent voice acting/narration.
I look forward to listening to more and reading more, so I may learn more and understand better.
Throughout most of the novel, the setting is 20th Century Apartheid-era South Africa, around the greater Johannesburg area. The epilogue events occur 29 years later.
I read several reader reviews first, and noted quite a ratings mixture. I am so glad that I did not allow others’ opinions to dissuade me from selecting this interesting, illuminating, well written book!
Quite baffling to me are any mediocre ratings or specific complaints and intimations that the novel is inherently “boring,” “disorganized,” or “confusing.” I quite disagree.
(If I can find a print version of the book, I’ll see if that will provide me with any clues).

Kidnappers grabbed Jenna in broad daylight, right in front of her children and their horrified classmates. Her family was issued an insane ransom demand: $25 million in cash and jewels, payable by the end of the school day, otherwise they’ll never see her again. As Jenna’s mother scrambles to gather the money, detectives Mo Butler and George Ortega follow the trail of the kidnappers, which will lead them through a sordid landscape of jealous lovers, broken dreamers, and twisted schemers. But every second counts, and there’s one thing Jenna Wade doesn’t have: very much time.

Worthwhile, Suspenseful, Short, and Sweet
Revisado: 10-04-24
Superbly performed. exciting, fast-paced, page-turning, think-before-looking-around-the corners crime thriller novella. Well written, directed, and produced.
Talented, enthusiastic voice actors and well-chosen sound effects transported my imagination straight to an off-Broadway theatre where I was treated to and became fully immersed in the stripped-down play. Form and substance without the distracting glitz.
Good stories, good writing, good acting, keen observation, cognitive depth, astute perception, disciplined study, integrative understanding, open mind/heart/spirit. Reflecting social organisms and their environments.

Brains. Solid sense of self & ethics. Vision. Motivation. Persistence. Hope. Raison d’être. Joie de vivre. Despite multigeneration history of damaging intrapersonal, interpersonal, & family dynamics dysfunction on author’s maternal side. Author makes the most of what healthy role models & relationships she fortunately does have access to in her social support system.

Voice acting performances excellent.
Revisado: 07-04-24
Performances were excellent. Story itself could have been superb: All the elements seemed to be there. I kept listening around the corner, anticipating, patiently moving about the station platform, looking along the tunnel tracks, waiting for the superb to show its face. It didn’t, that special late night A train. Or did I mis it? Flat and hollow ending, imo. Maybe I just need to read/listen again. Or maybe I’d be happier if I dust off my O. Henry collection. Or if the writers do.

Encouraging and inspiring to see that cognitive acumen, critical reasoning, prosocial ethics, and commitment to integrity are the protagonist’s superpowers.
