Historia
Before Owen Michaels disappears, he smuggles a note to his beloved wife of one year: Protect her. Despite her confusion and fear, Hannah Hall knows exactly to whom the note refers—Owen’s sixteen-year-old daughter, Bailey. Bailey, who lost her mother tragically as a child. Bailey, who wants absolutely nothing to do with her new stepmother. As Hannah’s increasingly desperate calls to Owen go unanswered, as the FBI arrests Owen’s boss, as a US marshal and federal agents arrive at her Sausalito home unannounced, Hannah quickly realizes her husband isn’t who he said he was.

just boring
Revisado: 11-22-21
how can I care what happens to a boring woman and a shitty, spoiled teen? these characters are utterly unlikable and plastic. it's like the writer is an alien trying to write about HU-mans for the first time and nails it, except for the nuance that makes us human.
it's also yet another "woman sacrifices all for child" book which is just tedious.

just terrible
Revisado: 04-17-21
narcissist and co-dependent fall in love. they inexplicably get locked in a house in Alaska (which they somehow know despite never being told where they were). it's all an elaborate setup because the narcissist has *so* many crazy stalker fans!
the medical aspects of the book are porky researched and mostly implausible. the book indicates that women physically beating men it's totally normal and ok. the book shows, at the end, that we silly women don't know ourselves and co-dependent men should force the issue when we say, "no," because they know better than us.
I really expected better from this author.

Looking at real estate isn’t usually a life-or-death situation, but an apartment open house becomes just that when a failed bank robber bursts in and takes a group of strangers hostage. The captives include a recently retired couple who relentlessly hunt down fixer-uppers to avoid the painful truth that they can’t fix their own marriage. There’s a wealthy bank director who has been too busy to care about anyone else and a young couple who are about to have their first child but can’t seem to agree on anything.

not his best
Revisado: 02-28-21
I really like Backman's work, particularly Beartown and A Man Called Ove. While this had the potential to be a sweet funny story, the narration was so preachy and heavy-handed, it made it hard to read. Additionally, some of the situations were so improbable (something involving a rabbit's head I don't want to spoil) that it was clearly just used as a device. the police interviews didn't seem even remotely believable...I think the conversations in Catch 22 were more realistic. So, while I respect the writer and the idea he had, I was very disappointed in the final product.

Historia
Dr. Emory Charbonneau, a pediatrician and marathon runner, disappears on a mountain road in North Carolina. By the time her husband Jeff, miffed over a recent argument, reports her missing, the trail has grown cold. Literally. Fog and ice encapsulate the mountainous wilderness and paralyze the search for her. While police suspect Jeff of "instant divorce," Emory, suffering from an unexplained head injury, regains consciousness and finds herself the captive of a man whose violent past is so dark that he won't even tell her his name.

oh God, where to start?
Revisado: 07-31-20
this began with a promising start, but quickly devolved into empty, unlikable characters. it was essentially a poorly written excuse to write erotica. characters make stupid, implausible decisions throughout. Doctors are major characters and a head injury is an important plot point, but the writer appears not to have researched either, as major mistakes piled up, one on top of another (I'm a doctor and I can deal with minor errors, but these were egregious. an example: a non-medical person mansplained child sex abuse to a prominent pediatrician who acted horrified that it could happen. a real pediatrician would have seen multiple cases and would have been explaining it to the other character)
speaking of that, this is the most sexist thing I'm read in a long time. the women, though 2 are doctors, are meek, stupid, and always wrong, unless they listen to their male counterpart. the "love" story is borderline abusive and without reason. I think the author was trying to go for a dom/sub thing, but this isn't it. this is proof that, even today, a woman can write something jaw-droppingly sexist.

just awful.
Revisado: 07-04-20
I read the Life We Bury a while back and found it engaging and clever, even if the ending was pat. I thought I'd try another book by this author.
first, these have to be the stupidest people ever doing the stupidest things, despite being cops. no one would make 90% of the decisions here.
second, the voice actor can deal with make characters, but his females sound nasal and bitchy. all of them.
last, one "good looking woman"is offended that an attacker doesn't want to rape her. I'm sorry, was this written in 1947?

I had a lot of problems with this book, bit I'll just get into the biggest one. the absolutely awful portrayal of the most stereotypical First Nations man. He's the magical wise old Indian who teaches a white boy how to be one with nature. I was cringing so hard I almost broke something.

Historia
Less than 250,000 people live in the Northern Territory, an area more than twice the size of Texas. If you want to escape from civilisation, you don’t have to go far. But you can’t outrun the heat. Every year during October and November the sweltering climate can drive people wild; they call it ‘Suicide Season’, ‘Mango Madness’ or, more plainly, ‘The Build-up’. It’s during this blistering heat that Jim O’Connell’s body is found in a creek bed, mummified and with his genitals removed.

overwrought with poorly drawn conclusions
Revisado: 03-08-20
regardless of anything else, this journalist's conclusions do not align with the physical autopsy findings. he can "believe" someone all day, but that person is lying if the state of the body does not match what that person claims happened. while I agree with his conclusion of who likely did it, his reason for drawing the conclusion is illegitimate. this is no Serial.

Historia
The death of promising young pediatric AIDS researcher Eric Miller stunned the Raleigh, North Carolina, community, largely because of the horrific way he was killed. For months, Eric was slowly tortured as arsenic consumed his body. No one thought that Eric Miller's wife, Ann - an attractive, demure, educated scientist - could be capable of such a horrible crime. No one except for veteran homicide investigator Chris Morgan, a man in the twilight of his career. But from the moment Morgan saw the 30-year-old widow in the police department interview room, he knew he was seeing pure evil.

just awful
Revisado: 01-27-20
This reads like an idolatrous tribute to a horrible man. I'm not sure what the writer was thinking.
At one point, the writer says something to the effect of, "he convinced a witness to travel to North Carolina without using deceit." the next sentence states that he did this by threatening to tell the witness's co-workers about what happened if he didn't come to North Carolina. Yes, he threatened a witness, who was not involved in the crime. He promised to keep this man's involvement quiet if he came out to NC (for the narcissistic reason that he didn't want to fly on an airplane). He then said the man's name in court and blamed the witness saying that he should have known this would happen.
The investigator comes across as a self-involved man who excuses any bad behavior in the name of "justice."
Very frustrating and annoying read. If the story had focused on the case, instead of the investigator, it probably would have been interesting.

it's 2019, and we still have this sexist crap?
Revisado: 12-19-19
In addition to the sad tale of a not-too-bright woman trying to do the police's work, the premise is, "what if my husband loved someone before me? I'm jealous!" and ends with, "now I know my husband loves me more, so my life is complete!".

Three women have been strangled in their homes, and it appears to be the work of the same sadistic killer. With no sign of break-ins, every indication shows that the women let their attacker in willingly. The victims' neighbors and friends don't seem to remember anything unusual or suspicious, and Maeve is almost at a loss about how to move forward with the investigation.
