Historia
Texas, 1921. A time of abundance. The Great War is over, the bounty of the land is plentiful, and America is on the brink of a new and optimistic era. But for Elsa Wolcott, deemed too old to marry in a time when marriage is a woman’s only option, the future seems bleak. Until the night she meets Rafe Martinelli. By 1934, the world has changed; millions are out of work and drought has devastated the Great Plains. Elsa must make an agonizing choice: fight for the land she loves or leave it behind and go west, to California, in search of a better life for her family.

Came for Kristin Hannah, Stayed for Julia Whelan
Revisado: 12-01-24
Great story, though so long? Why was this book SO LONG? If Julia Whelan didn't narrate, IDK if I would have made it through to the end. Beautiful story, I loved the evolution of our leading lady as she journey's through motherhood during one of the most traumatic times in American history.

Historia
Coexisting but conflicting needs create self-sabotaging behaviors. This is why we resist efforts to change, often until they feel completely futile. But by extracting crucial insight from our most damaging habits, building emotional intelligence by better understanding our brains and bodies, releasing past experiences at a cellular level, and learning to act as our highest potential future selves, we can step out of our own way and into our potential.

I felt so exposed listening to this because it really called me out in the most gentle way possible. Took tons of notes and will be applying this to my life. This book has something for everyone under the sun so I'm glad it was so broad. Some things I related to, some I didn't. Great balance. Brianna West is right... The Mountain IS YOU.

Historia
Trauma nurse Aly Cappellucci doesn’t need any more kinks. She likes the one she’s landed on just fine. To her, nothing could top the masked men she follows online. Unless one of those men was shirtless, heavily tattooed, and waiting for her in her bedroom. She dreams about being hunted by one in particular, of him chasing her down and doing deliciously dark things to her willing body. She never could have guessed that by sending one drunken text, those dreams would become her new reality.

ITS PERFECT!!!
Revisado: 12-01-24
This was sinfully good. When I say I want a well written, well thought out dark romance, THIS is what I mean.
Every element of this book was believable. Author did her research and nothing felt like she just read it on Reddit and hoped for the best. I was fully invested in all characters and truly had no clue where we were going scene after scene. I loved being taken by surprise.
You can feel the attraction they have for each other so it's believable they would end up where they did by the end. The pacing was perfection. The banter was bantering. I was laughing out loud at the gym it was so good. I am also obsessed with the cat (obv, because how could you not be?)
The narrators were phenomenal and so perfect. Will be downloading more books from them as well.
I am all in Navessa Allen. Already pre-ordered the next book.

Sam and Sadie—two college friends, often in love, but never lovers—become creative partners in a dazzling and intricately imagined world of video game design, where success brings them fame, joy, tragedy, duplicity, and, ultimately, a kind of immortality. It is a love story, but not one you have heard before.

DNF @ 18%
Revisado: 12-01-24
I'm just going to list all the negatives:
Author spent more time TELLING than showing. I only understand these characters based on what she told me, not from what we saw.
Weird pacing and time jumps that were unclear.
Completely unlikable characters. Didn't enjoy a single person except Mark.
Did anyone even like each other in this book?
Jennifer Kim has an ultra distracting vocal cadence that goes up and down whenever she pleases and is completely flat 90% of the time.
Never made it to Julian Cihi's narration so no notes for him.
Read the plot synopsis on wiki- so glad I DNF'd.

Absolutely Loved
Revisado: 12-01-24
This was such a fun, short read. It was deliciously steamy in all the right ways. I loved that it had a real plot line with side characters with their own personalities and not just filler characters. I loved their banter and how real it was. Honestly the perfect winter romcom. I would eat up more of these novellas by Ali Hazelwood!

Kelly Bishop’s long, storied career has been defined by landmark achievements, from winning a Tony Award for her turn in the original Broadway cast of A Chorus Line to her memorable performance as Jennifer Grey’s mother in Dirty Dancing. Kelly Bishop is Magic
Revisado: 12-01-24
Great narration and loved the Amy Sherman-Palladino forward. You can tell these women greatly respect and love each other which is refreshing since Hollywood is so cut throat. I loved hearing about her life from a Chorus Line through her career to present day.

This is a tale of murder. Or maybe that’s not quite true. At its heart, it’s a love story, isn’t it? Lana Farrar is a reclusive ex-movie star and one of the most famous women in the world. Every year, she invites her closest friends to escape the English weather and spend Easter on her idyllic private Greek island.

I liked it but it was mid
Revisado: 05-06-24
I stress the word like, because this felt short of any thing more than that. It took years for this book to come out and it was short and mid. I listened to this when it came out months ago and have already forgotten most of it. It felt... rushed? Didn't feel like there was a clear direction we were headed in. I loved the concept though and think the characters could have been great on their own. Alex didn't fall short of his prose (that was great), but it did feel like something is missing from the story. Maybe another conflict or faster pacing?
SPOILERS-
The group agreeing to scare the narrator after what he did was unhinged and so out of character for everyone involved?? I gave that true side eye.
I do think it should have ended with him standing on the cliff and talking about the fury of the wind and ocean or whatever he said. That brought it full circle and should have been the ending. Should have left us guessing what comes next.

a masterpiece
Revisado: 05-06-24
I read Home Before Morning by Lynda Van Devanter when I was 16 and it profoundly moved me. I was so pleased to hear in the Acknowledgements that Kristin Hannah herself read it and used it as inspiration for The Women. This book rocked me to my core and I have not stopped thinking about it. What a time in the history of women and only a generation ago. Kristin does a great job of portraying the juxtaposition of women who served vs women who didn't, etc. Our FMC's trauma is so real, so visceral you can almost taste it. I think that is in part due to Julia Whelan's beautiful narration that can bring any story to life. Kristin's own narrated Acknowledgements had me balling.
To every man and woman who served - THANK YOU. This country is nothing without bravery and sacrifice. I cannot imagine the horrors you have seen, the friends lost or the way it has changed you. May you go forth knowing you are seen, you are cherished and you are loved. I hope every single one of you is made whole again through the community of those who have also served.

Here is the novel that will be forever considered a triumph of the imagination. Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Maud'dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream.

the performance could have been better
Revisado: 05-06-24
The narrators were lovely individuals, but the way WHOEVER put them together in this format needs to be sent straight to jail. The text in the book is already confusing, but I feel like the partial narration made it worse. Ex- either have one narrator do ALL OF THE VOICES, or allow Feyd's narrator to actually narrate EVERY LINE HE HAS and so forth. Not just when it's a few paragraphs from his POV or whatever. With a cast this big, I expected them to have more lines. Also, one of the narrator's had an echo in his recording so that was distracting. Not a single engineer caught that at Audible?? The timing of the music was also weird... again, do it consistently or don't. And why didn't this Audible include the soundtrack from the movie then or graphic novel style with sounds of the knives?? Not the performers fault... I just expect more from an Amazon company.

Georgie hasn’t been on a date since, well, ever. Nobody’s asking the town clown out for a night of hot sex, that’s for sure. Maybe if people think she’s having a steamy love affair, they’ll acknowledge she’s not just the “little sister” who paints faces for a living. And who better to help demolish that image than the resident sports star and tabloid favorite? Travis Ford was major league baseball’s hottest rookie when an injury ended his career. Now, he’s flipping houses to keep busy and trying to forget his glory days.

why isn't this more popular??
Revisado: 05-06-24
This book was SO FUN! I really enjoyed it and the side characters. They all felt unique and like individuals pursuing their own interests rather than just to move the plot forward for our leads. I wish there was a bit more conflict for the climax moment, but it was a great book all around. Not a lot gets 'fixed up' at the house, but most of the growth happens with our FMC. I love the evolution she had and how she never felt ashamed of who she was, but rather, wanted to try something new to elevate herself. She stayed true to who she is. That's beautiful.
The steamy was STEAMY. The couch??? I nearly died.
Narrator was fab! Going to listen to more books she's read for stat.
