Historia
We have reached a state of utter absurdity, where journalism schools teach students that their own personal truth or chosen narratives matter more than reality. In Slanted, Attkisson digs into the language of propagandists, the persistence of false media narratives, the driving forces behind today's dangerous blend of facts and opinion, the abandonment of journalism ethics, and the new, Orwellian definition of what it means to report the news.

Slanted Sharyl
Revisado: 09-15-21
Sharyl is so blind to her own bias it’s hard to take her seriously at all.
The one point she has, that the media is no place for impartiality, is 100% correct. She provides a tonne of evidence but none of it is in any way credible. Pro Trump, anti-liberal, the book is a defence of the Trump administration. You’d have to be an idiot, a literal idiot, to believe the Trump administration was the victim of and not the most influential force shaping the media from 2016-2020. Good luck Sharyl, seems you slanted.

Historia
News is to the mind as sugar is to the body. In 2013 Rolf Dobelli stood in front of a room full of journalists and proclaimed that he did not read the news. It caused a riot. Now he finally sets down his philosophy in detail. And he practices what he preaches: he hasn't read the news for a decade. Stop Reading the News is Dobelli's manifesto about the dangers of the most toxic form of information - news. He shows the damage it does to our concentration and well-being and how a misplaced sense of duty can misdirect our behaviour.

The art of thinking vacantly
Revisado: 08-21-21
This book could be half as short and twice as effective. What ruins it are the subjective comments that show there are more serious, better qualified authors on this topic.
Some choice quotes:
“The war in Palestine is getting boring after all these years.” Oh really?
‘If only journalists had more time.’ Sure.
‘News ad spend is down’ He means newspapers.
‘Don’t be ideological.’ Oh really?
‘My friends read The Economist features.’ Ha Ha Ha… thing is unreadable. What was that about ideology?

Historia
In Bloody Foreigners and The Last Wolf, Robert Winder explored the way Britain was shaped first by migration and then by hidden geographical factors. Now, in Soft Power he explores the way modern states are asserting themselves not through traditional realpolitik but through alternative means: business, language, culture, ideas, sport, education, music, even food...the texture and values of history and daily life.

Too soft on power
Revisado: 10-14-20
This book is actually a series of character studies on national identity, it’s not a book on soft power. It doesn’t give much away either about how soft power works, only it’s effects.

Historia
An examination of a world increasingly defined by disorder and a United States unable to shape the world in its image, from the president of the Council on Foreign Relations. Things fall apart; the center cannot hold. The rules, policies, and institutions that have guided the world since World War II have largely run their course. Respect for sovereignty alone cannot uphold order in an age defined by global challenges from terrorism and the spread of nuclear weapons to climate change and cyberspace. Meanwhile, great power rivalry is returning.

Otherwise perfectly serviceable. It manages to plod along quite well but without offering any flair.

Historia
We live in a time of unprecedented upheaval, when technology and so-called progress have made us richer but more uncertain than ever before. We have questions about the future, society, work, happiness, family and money, and yet no political party of the right or left is providing us with answers. So, too, does the time seem to be coming to an end when we looked to economists to help us define the qualities necessary to create a successful society. We need a new movement.

A rehash of left ideals dressed as liberalist realism
Revisado: 06-02-20
A retelling of things I’ve read before in Harari’s Homo Deus. Credits himself with popularity of UBI. Discredits “underdog socialists” for not sticking to their principles. Author in need of a political education.
