Just a beautifully written story
Revisado: 10-11-24
This story was probably the best one I’ve read/listened to this year. It’s a love story on many levels. There’s a bit of mystery, but the characters are complex and imperfect yet I fell in love with them.

So far my favorite from this author
Revisado: 07-13-24
I loved this book. I admit I have become a bit of an Elin Hilderbrand (and Erin Bennett, the narrator) superfan.
I really loved the interview between Elin and Erin also. One thing Elin Hilderbrand said was that her books or her writing was a bit more surface level- not so heavy- as what her fellow writers in college thought it should be. For me, this is a benefit! I love that her books hold my interest, usually have a bit of mystery and romance. Sometimes I get a little sick of all my book club books.
I have not read any of her books, but I love listening to them. And of course, I want to visit Nantucket.
The nice thing is that lots of the characters are in multiple books, but each is a standalone.
Swan Song gave me all the things I love- mystery, romance, drama, imperfect characters, and tears. Definitely a good read, and I recommend checking out the other Nantucket novels.

Historia
Thousands of miles from home, a woman stands on a dark street, peeking through well-lit windows at two little girls. They are the grandchildren she’s never met, daughters of the daughter she has not seen in years. At the center of this mesmerizing story is the woman’s quest to understand how a relationship that began in bliss—a mother besotted with her only child—arrived at a point of such unfathomable distance. Weaving back and forth in time, she unravels memories and long-buried feelings, retracing the infinite acts of parental care.

I was glad I finished it, but…
Revisado: 01-11-24
This book is narrated in the first person like something of a memoir. The main character, who becomes increasingly unlikeable due in part to her mental illness (my diagnosis, but she references depression often), weaves back and forth from the past to the present.
The premise is that she is estranged from her daughter, Leah, who has left the country and has a family that she has intentionally hidden from Yoella, the narrator.
I found myself bored not only with the story but also with the narrator, but I think she narrated in keeping with the story.
It wasn’t until the end that I felt that I really figured out the main character and how much her mental illness played a role in her story.
I have seen other reviews that said it felt unfinished, and I can see that. However, not sure I would have wanted much more from the story.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Deals with serious topics but is an easy listen

The characters are very well developed. I loved Elizabeth Zott, and I just might have to get AppleTV once the series comes out.
The only thing that nagged at me was that the premise of her character, and indeed the reason she had a cooking show, was that she was creating the perfect formula to feed her daughter. She was so non-conforming, yet she still fed her baby with a bottle (consistent with what the advice was at the time). There was no explanation for this, and it just wasn’t particularly consistent with her character. That’s a minor critique, and probably has something to do with the fact that I’m a mom and in healthcare.
My favorite character was the dog, though. He was exceptional.

Historia
The year is 1921, and "Nobody" Alice James has just arrived in Oregon with a bullet wound, a lifetime's experience battling the New York Mafia, and 50,000 dollars in illicit cash. She befriends Max, a Black Pullman porter who reminds her achingly of home and who saves Alice by leading her to the Paragon Hotel. But her unlikely sanctuary turns out to be an all-Black hotel in a Jim Crow city, and its lodgers seem unduly terrified of a White woman on the premises. She understands their dread. The Ku Klux Klan has arrived in Portland in fearful numbers.

Performance was one of the best I’ve heard.
Revisado: 12-21-22
I loved this historical fiction. I live in Portland, so it was very interesting to hear some of the history of my city and state.
The author managed to weave in several topics of interest for the period she writes about as well as a few modern ones (some things never really go away- like bigotry).
The character Nobody- Alice- is a keen observer, giving us a full description of the other characters.
Finally, narrator January LaJoy is positively radiant in performing this story. She switches between characters effortlessly, and her voice is very pleasant.

Historia
Edith and Ashley have been best friends for over forty-two years. They’ve shared the mundane and the momentous together: trick or treating and binge drinking; Gilligan’s Island reruns and REM concerts; hickeys and heartbreak; surprise Scottish wakes; marriages, infertility, and children. As Ash says, “Edi’s memory is like the back-up hard drive for mine.”

Emotional read
Revisado: 11-22-22
I enjoyed this book about best friends, loss, and all the things that make us human. The main character, Ash, is self-deprecating and charming, although she’s a bit of a hot mess.
She’s going through a divorce, losing her best friend, and she’s also a loving and kind person who sometimes is too self- absorbed.
As a nurse, I sometimes found the descriptions of the Hospice and medical staff cringey, but I mostly tried to ignore it.
The narrator’s voice captured all of Ash’s emotions perfectly.
