Enjoyable but narrator problems
Revisado: 11-07-24
I enjoyed the stories and would like to continue the series. The narrator was great when reading the narration and for most men's voices but his females were awful, to the point of caricature. Very jarring.

Perfect
Revisado: 10-13-21
I love this series of books. Will Dean is a wonderful writer who combines fascinating mysteries set in an unfamiliar background with well-drawn characters. He also has an almost lyrical way of describing the atmosphere in the forest and the experiences of his very hard of hearing main character. And the narrator, Maya Lindh, is the perfect choice. Her accent and her ‘acting’ skills add immeasurably to the enjoyment of the novels.

Beautiful narration
Revisado: 05-28-21
I really enjoy this series of three books by Will Dean. The writing is so vivid and the descriptions of the insects, tics etc in the deep forest were horrible - so believable. I also love the narration. Meya Lindh IS the protagonist as far as I’m concerned. Some people find her ‘mispronunciations ‘ annoying but I think they’re delightful and typical of my Scandinavian students who are learning English. I hope Will Dean will write more in the series.

Historia
The sisters of Gwenafwy Abbey have cherished their contemplative life - days spent in prayer, reflection, tending the convent's vegetable gardens and making their award-winning organic cheese, Heavenly Gouda. Life seems perfect, except for Sister Agatha, a die-hard mystery fan who despairs of ever finding any real life inspiration for her own novel. That is, until the abbey's sexton is found dead under an avalanche of gouda. Despite the reservations of the local constable, Sister Agatha is convinced it's murder and the game is afoot.

Strange mistakes
Revisado: 05-16-21
The story was fun and the narrator was excellent but has the author spent any time in the UK where the book is set? There were strange errors on every page starting at the very beginning with the word zucchini - we say courgette in the UK. It was followed by many more errors. For example, we don’t have bail bondsmen or talk about dumpsters, college basketball etc. The author also worked hard to add Welsh language elements but then mentioned a Welshcake being fresh from the oven - they are cooked on a griddle! I was very tempted to stop listening but I was enjoying the narration so much that I carried on - I decided to play ‘Spot the Error’ instead!

Historia
Promising architect Peter Young is shot dead at his desk. DCI Craig Gillard is on the scene, looking at what appears to be a brutal and highly professional hit: two bullets, fired with ice-cold calm. Gillard knows that the most crucial question in solving the crime is one word: why? Two weeks later, on the Lincolnshire coast, another body is found on a windswept beach. In this case there is no identity for the young man, just a curious brand burned into his neck....

Terrible narration, excellent plot
Revisado: 04-12-21
This is the second of this series I have read. If I didn’t like the main character and the author’s plotting, I would have given up after a few minutes into the first book. The narrator is fine when reading the story but, without exception, his character voices are awful. Most of them are laughable - his women sound especially ridiculous - and his attempts at accents, including that if the main character are like caricatures.

Revisado: 01-10-21
I loved the gentle thoughts of this almost Mexican! I live in Mexico and recognise so much that he described, from the solemn abuela to the sweet conchas. My only criticism is that it was too short - I’d love to hear more about the author, his family and his food!

Cambridge, 1354. Christmas approaches, and the town is gripped by the worst blizzards in living memory. As the physician Matthew Bartholomew struggles to help the poorer citizens cope with freezing temperatures, his colleagues prepare for the festivities. The weather has trapped many travellers in the town, including Matthew's erstwhile love, Philippa. She and her wealthy husband are invited to Michaelhouse for the main feast, and Matthew is horrified that he does not immediately recognise the overweight, sulky woman who once stole his heart.

Revisado: 02-25-20
I love this series. The two main characters are consistent - I always believe in their motivations and actions - amusingly different from each other and there is a real affection between them. The historical detail is fascinating and the stories are satisfyingly complete. The narrator is excellent and the many characters are always distinguishable from each other. Also, the books are long, so great value for money!
