Gripping

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. The narration added so much to the story, which, in itself, was incredible. The author’s ability to weave in so many twists and turns while keeping the story flowing was brilliant.

Historia
Talk of impending war is a steady drumbeat throughout North Carolina, though Joetta McBride pays it little heed. She and her husband, Ennis, have built a modest but happy life for themselves, raising two sons, fifteen-year-old Henry, and eleven-year-old Robert, on their small subsistence farm. They do not support the Confederacy's position on slavery, but Joetta considers her family to be neutral, believing this is simply not their fight. Her opinion is not favored by many in their community, including Joetta's own father-in-law, Rudean.

Great story
Revisado: 04-18-24
I almost didn’t finish the book because the narration was odd. At first, I even thought it was a virtual voice. But I kept listening and am glad I did. A heartwarming story of resilience, strength and forgiveness. The author brilliantly conveys the struggles of the characters to the listeners and beautifully portrays how conflict can bring out the best and the worst in people.

Historia
Abigail Milton was born into the British middle class, but her family has landed in unthinkable debt. To ease their burdens, Abby's parents send her to America to live off the charity of their old friend. When she arrives in Charleston at the age of 17, Abigail discovers that the man her parents raved about is a disagreeable widower who wants little to do with her. Just as she begins to grow comfortable in her new life, she overhears her benefactor planning the escape of a local slave - and suddenly, everything she thought she knew about Douglas Elling is turned on its head.

Good story
Revisado: 10-23-23
Thoroughly enjoyed the story. Author addresses the very worst of human traits but allows good to win in the end. Epilogue was stellar. Narration was soothing and brought the characters to life.

The place: rural Vermont. The time: the Great Depression. Henry Talcott's beautiful wife, Irene, has recently left him. He and their two young children, Thomas and Margaret, are spending the summer in a tent on the edge of Black Pond. It's a bittersweet idyll.

Good story but too much profanity
Revisado: 09-17-23
Really enjoyed the storyline. Very touching and I was hoping the children would find their happy ending. Narration was wonderful, the singing was a real treat . Three stars for the language. Sorry, but not a fan of that.

Historia
"The dead can't hurt you. Only the living can." Effie Jones, a former slave who escaped to the Union side as a child, knows the truth of her words. Taken in by an army surgeon and his wife during the War, she learned to read and write, to tolerate the sight of blood and broken bodies - and to forget what is too painful to bear. Now a young freedwoman, she has returned south to New Orleans and earns her living as an embalmer, her steady hand and skillful incisions compensating for her white employer's shortcomings.

I really enjoyed the book! The history, the story and the characters. The narration was excellent, a true performance. Wish there would be a sequel, would love to see Effie succeed and find true love :)
