Historia
Set against the backdrop of China's Cultural Revolution, a secret military project sends signals into space to establish contact with aliens. An alien civilization on the brink of destruction captures the signal and plans to invade Earth. Meanwhile, on Earth, different camps start forming, planning to either welcome the superior beings and help them take over a world seen as corrupt, or to fight against the invasion. The result is a science fiction masterpiece of enormous scope and vision.

An orgy of junk science
Revisado: 10-25-24
As a PhD and former college professor, I can say this book is the worst kind of junk science fest. It bastardizes leading edge concepts in the most bizarre ways, adding in lots of jargon to create a veneer of credibility.
Additionally, the characters are shallow and uninteresting. By the very abrupt and unsatisfying end, I disliked them all.
The only interesting parts were the stories of the Chinese cultural revolution and struggle sessions at the beginning. The narration is quite good, but that can't save an otherwise disappointing story.
I'm left baffled at how this book is so highly acclaimed.

Historia
The galaxy remembers Hadrian Marlowe as a hero: the man who burned every last alien Cielcin from the sky. They remember him as a monster: the devil who destroyed a sun, casually annihilating four billion human lives - even the emperor himself - against Imperial orders. But Hadrian was not a hero. He was not a monster. He was not even a soldier. Fleeing his father and a future as a torturer, Hadrian finds himself stranded on a strange, backwater world.

Sun Eater is going to be a sci fi classic
Revisado: 09-20-24
Do yourself a favor and read this book! The prose is elegant without being haughty. The world building is original, expansive, and fascinating. The characters are interesting. The hero is honorable but also flawed and troubled. The villains are terrifying, complex, and thought provoking. After reading Empire of Silence, I enthusiasticl gobbled up the other books in the series. Now I can't wait for the final installment next year.

Why do people claim to love this book?
Revisado: 09-20-24
Having just finished Red Rising, I find that I'm angry that I was duped by the glowing reviews of what is an unimaginative, unoriginal, highly derivative work. Perhaps the publisher is review farming and paying YouTubers to push the series? I kept thinking, "this can't really be just a bad Hunger Games knock off set on Mars." Yep. "The reviews were so enthusiasticly good, it has to get better." Nope. On top of that, the Audible narration, while professional, just doesn't work. I hear the next book in the series is "even better." I'll be taking a pass.

Twenty-seven years later, the Firstborn are back. This time, they have sent a "quantum bomb" speeding toward Earth, a device that human scientists can barely comprehend, let alone stop or destroy. But when shocking new insights emerge about the nature of the Firstborn and their plans, an unexpected ally appears from light-years away.

Disappointing conclusion to the series.
Revisado: 01-09-24
I had high hopes after the excellent second installment, but the final book in the series disappoints. At some point the number of logical contradictions becomes too much. And the dabling in sociological and political issues is both boorish and naive. The ending fizzles badly. It feels like the author boxed himself into a corner and simply threw his hands up at the end. It's too bad, as there were some truly innovative elements to the overall story.

Highly duplicative with Four Pillars.
Revisado: 10-14-23
Bernstein's Four Pillars of Investing is a must read for any investor. Don't bother with this earlier book. The newer one basically adds to the old one, copying large parts.
