*Sigh* Simply Beautiful
Revisado: 04-21-25
One of the most beautiful stories I’ve read (ig listened to) in a very long time. So mature, so real, so special! Just fantastic writing, magnificent performance. Five stars don’t really feel like enough…

Historia
Lana Fleming’s sister has vanished from the set of TV’s hottest show, and no one seems to care. Desperate for answers, Lana sneaks in as an extra, only to get stranded with Griffin Hart, an A-list action star with a reputation for good abs and bad decisions. Though Griffin didn’t expect to be cast as a librarian’s sidekick in a real-life thriller, he’s weirdly into it—and into her. Even more unsettling—she sees right through his playboy persona. But their meet-cute soon turns deadly when they uncover a Hollywood scandal for the ages.

The Nature and Nurture of Narcissism

Historia
The world has been indoctrinated with the false notion that narcissism is the result of a bad childhood. It’s as if narcissists have been granted immunity from responsibility. Mental health professionals - and the general public alike - seem more than willing to offer narcissists a perfectly convenient scapegoat: trauma. The goal of this book, using the most recent empirical evidence on the etiology and treatment of narcissistic personality disorder - is to dispel the widely held and already discredited myth that narcissism is the result of childhood trauma.

Validating, explanatory, honestly brilliant
Revisado: 12-23-24
Dr. Salerno, at first, didn’t sound as academic as I expected. But before long, I realized he has truly been around the block with narcissistic personality disorder (NPD), and from both directions. His findings and data are shared plainly, simply, clearly, even humbly, and to my mind, leave no question as to the origin and possible therapies for NPD. Many “a-ha” moments for me as the book confirmed what I already knew from experience - that no amount of wishful thinking or self-subjugation could possibly prove enough to appease, let alone change, a true narcissist. Dr. Salerno, thank you for your work and efforts to inform both your profession and the masses alike.

April 2011: On a remote mountaintop overlooking the remains of the Iranian nuclear weapons program, Azad Ashani witnesses a Quds Force demonstration of a capability meant to upend America’s war in the Middle East. Ashani, director of the Iranian Ministry of Intelligence and Security and Irene Kennedy’s former back channel to the Iranian government, recognizes the demonstration’s true significance, and the nation-ending conflict it will provoke. Alone, Ashani stands no chance of preventing this rush to madness.

Not the same…
Revisado: 09-10-24
Chapters being as short as they are, feels like predictable events are constantly left hanging for an annoying amount of time. There is more backstory than action, which above all is not a Mitch Rapp characteristic, but also makes it feel like you hear extremely brief conversations interspersed with an ungodly amount of background info. If I’d been reading the book I absolutely would’ve skipped large swaths of details that took away from movement of the plot. And speaking of plot, to only have conjecture about the bad guy’s motives in the epilogue is so incredibly deflating. Felt like 100 scenes taped together without cohesive connections. Lastly, I’d like to know a lot more about the writer’s direction and intentions for the series. Strange to hop back in time and feel like we’re missing something big in Mitch’s character metamorphosis. PS I really appreciate moments where we see Mitch as a real person and not just an arrow in the quiver of the US govt’s clandestine operations, sharpest one though he may be.

Historia
Sometimes, the worst day of your life happens, and you have to figure out how to live after it. So Clementine forms a plan to keep her heart safe: work hard, find someone decent to love, and try to remember to chase the moon. The last one is silly and obviously metaphorical, but her aunt always told her that you needed at least one big dream to keep going. And for the last year, that plan has gone off without a hitch. Mostly. The love part is hard because she doesn’t want to get too close to anyone—she isn’t sure her heart can take it.

JUST MOVE ON ALREADY
Revisado: 08-20-24
The writing is so SO redundant. As if every thought clementine ever had has to be shared again when she has another thought. Exaggeration, yes, but you get the point. Seems like the author is more in love with her writing than the story, or the reader… and the voices were fine with one major exception - the main male character, Ewan. Her effort at gravelly southern male was cringey enough to make me give up on the book altogether, but I stuck with it for the sake of the recommender. Between the repetition and the awful male voice, I ended up listening on 2x speed.

Historia
It’s the summer of ’77 in New York City, and the only thing more unnerving than the scorching heatwave is the rampant murder, leaving washed-up homicide detective Richard Dietrich on edge. When Dietrich investigates a brutal mob hit the brass doesn’t want him to solve, he goes from phoning it in to getting in over his head. Caught up in a mysterious second homicide with an even more perplexing perpetrator, Dietrich starts to second guess his instincts—and his memory—as he searches for answers at the bottom of a bottle.

Just super depressing
Revisado: 06-10-24
The underbelly of the 1970s/1980s corrupt NYPD, seedy and effused with stale alcohol and even more stale characters - which is actually a compliment to the writing, bc they truly would’ve been that way. Just not the story for you if you prefer triumph and redemption as your themes, which I do.

I only wish this conclusion to The Midwife of Auschwitz could be true, but true or not, it was a beautiful story beautifully told. And achingly true in all of the tragedy portrayed.

Historia
In August of 1914, the British ship Endurance set sail for the South Atlantic. In October 1915, still half a continent away from its intended base, the ship was trapped, then crushed in the ice. For five months, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men, drifting on ice packs, were castaways in one of the most savage regions of the world. Lansing describes how the men survived a 1,000-mile voyage in an open boat across the stormiest ocean on the globe and an overland trek through forbidding glaciers and mountains.

As if I was there
Revisado: 09-25-21
Simon Prebble is a master story teller! His impeccable accents gave life to each character, and his voice even became a comfort during the incredible privations and terrors he described. Lansing’s writing exceeded all expectation, and I was grateful to have so much work to do outside these several weeks if for no other reason than to get back to this book. I listened to it during any break I could find during the work day. Incredible.
