just fun!
Revisado: 10-02-22
If you need something to cleanse your mental palate, Dixie Divas is an excellent choice~ enough of a mystery to engage, enough lighthearted Southern humor and pathos for laughs, and the narrator was spectacular. Of course, men and women who appreciate modern Southern style will all enjoy this escape. Just finished it for the 2nd time, and enjoyed it even more!

Important book~ geared to lay/uninformed
Revisado: 01-01-22
I loved this book~ filled in some blanks, confirmed my own concerns/suspicions/interpretations of what was going on. Filled in a few blanks. As an experienced public health professional and geek, there were sections I found a bit redundant. However, this may make it better for the average reader. The reading style was also very engaging. thank you!

Historia
Random House presents the audiobook edition of The Mechanic written and read by Marc 'Elvis' Priestley. In the high-octane atmosphere of the Formula One pit lane, the spotlight is most often on the superstar drivers. And yet, without the technical knowledge, competitive determination and outright obsession from his garage of mechanics, no driver could possibly hope to claim a spot on the podium.

Fun... but slow down!!!!!!!
Revisado: 10-06-19
as an Olympic games level athletic trainer, I've often liked my profession to that of a car racing pit crew. so I picked up Priestley's book looking forward to seeing if my analogy held true. it did, in spades! fun, fast paced, hilarious... but the narration was so fast, it wore me out, and I couldn't listen for too long. by slowing the playback speed down to about 9, I was able to thoroughly enjoy all of the stories and the rest of the book. just a suggestion, it will be worth it!

Historia
If Henry James or Edith Wharton had written a novel describing the accomplished and glamorous life and times of John Hay, it would have been thought implausible - a novelist’s fancy. Nevertheless, John Taliaferro’s brilliant biography captures the extraordinary life of Hay, one of the most amazing figures in American history, and restores him to his rightful place. John Hay was both witness and author of many of the most significant chapters in American history - from the birth of the Republican Party, the Civil War, and the Spanish-American War, to the prelude to the First World War.

engaging subject, great performance, history
Revisado: 05-21-16
as a student at Brown University, I loved the John Hay Library. this book presented an opportunity to know the man. little did i know what a delightful and exciting journey that would be! history, from the inside, from the beginning of the Lincoln administration and into the early 20th century~ what a time for our nation and the world! An engaging character, a story well read... I couldn't stop listening!

Historia
Researcher and thought leader Dr. Brené Brown offers a powerful new vision that encourages us to dare greatly: to embrace vulnerability and imperfection, to live wholeheartedly, and to courageously engage in our lives. In Daring Greatly, Dr. Brown challenges everything we think we know about vulnerability. Based on 12 years of research, her book argues that vulnerability is not weakness but rather our clearest path to courage, engagement, and meaningful connection.

Historia
From the former secretary of defense, a strikingly candid, vivid account of serving Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. When Robert M. Gates received a call from the White House, he thought he'd long left Washington politics behind: After working for six presidents in both the CIA and the National Security Council, he was happily serving as president of Texas A&M University. But when he was asked to help a nation mired in two wars and to aid the troops doing the fighting, he answered what he felt was the call of duty.

long, but fascinating. Gates was "the adult in the room" in DC during critical times. happy he was there addressing all the BS that those of us who love our country feared was going on... Reader did a great job w/Gates's voice and tempo.
thank you, Mr. Gates!

Historia
On the surface, everything is all right with Babbitt’s world of the solid, successful businessman. But in reality, George F. Babbitt is a lonely, middle-aged man. He doesn’t understand his family, has an unsuccessful attempt at an affair, and is almost financially ruined when he dares to voice sympathy for some striking workers. Babbitt finds that his only safety lies deep in the fold of those who play it safe. He is a man who has added a new word to our language: a “Babbitt,” meaning someone who conforms unthinkingly, a sheep.

surprised!
Revisado: 02-09-16
I'd heard Babbitt referred to as a negative stereotype of a man... but the man, and hisstruggles, are just as relevant today as in the 1920s. human nature well described, mid-life crisis, ... enjoyed it very much.
