Very detailed discussion of Short Line Railroads in Western Pennsylvania during the late 1800's through the collapse of the Penn Central Corporation. I had thought that it might be more of a discussion of the rivalries and the like between the PRR and the NYC, but it really just talked about the opening and closing of routes.

It is, admittedly, hard to produce a bad show when you are faithful to great source material. And the source material is great. But so to is this production. The voice actors are wonderful at bringing their parts to life. The sound effects and the like are great. One can almost smell the marketplace. The producers had the sense to stay true to the source material and the result is a true winner. The only downside of any of these wonderful BBC/Neil Gaiman productions is that they seem to end too quickly.

Its an interesting premise. Its relatively well executed. But I think that they really only had a "one joke" skit in mind and had a little trouble spinning it off into a series. It has your usual high quality performances and great sound. The story is just a little bit weak.

The narrator did not know how to properly pronounce many key words. If a place name appears once or twice, okay, maybe that is excusable. but when it's a key place like Lake Champlain get it right. he did not. his strange pronunciation. rendered the performance unlistenable.

the book needed some editing. it would repeat various basic facts more than once. the organization was also unclear, jumping backward and forward in time. the performance had similar issues from a strained attempt at an American accent (think the American version if dick van dyke cockney) to repetition of sentences and paragraphs. sloppy audio editing.

Listening to this is like drinking Water from a fire hose. It has lots of brilliant stuff in it, its just not that well organized and with its length its hard to keep track of where you are. Welles is always brilliant. This shows his best work. The sound is well recorded. Its a five (or six) star performance and a five star set of stories. But it gets a three overall because the greatness gets lost in the greatness and the inherent difficulty in organizing an audio book.

Benny and Allen? How Can you Go Wrong

Revisado: 02-05-16

Would you consider the audio edition of Jack Benny vs. Fred Allen: The Feud to be better than the print version?

Yes. Since a print version of this wouldn't work at all.

What did you like best about this story?

It is amazing that the young kid who was the violinist ended up with a major international career including a win at one of the world's most important violin contests.

Which scene was your favorite?

Can a mother choose a favorite child? This is allen and benny. Its all good. Benny's a little less "topical" and requires less "work" (although he is brilliant), Allen's humor is more topical and requires more work to understand it. But both are at the top of their game. We don't have comedians of this skill at this time in our media.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes. The speech near the end by the young violinist thanking Allen for the money and saying that he hoped to use it to study hard. And to look back and realize that he did.

What would have made Camp Waterlogg Chronicles, Seasons 6 - 10 better?

Better writing. It was a wandering mish-mash of words and humor. Maybe it would have worked better if I was high... but since I don't use drugs it didn't work

What was most disappointing about the authors’s story?

What is disappointing is that this appears to be some of the "best" of the American attempts to perform British style Radio comedy. It just comes off flat and, frankly, not funny. Not funny is the worst judgment that can be applied to a work of comedy.

What didn’t you like about the narrators’s performance?

This was an audio drama, not a narrator. I just didn't like the performances.

What character would you cut from Camp Waterlogg Chronicles, Seasons 6 - 10?

I would have cut however many characters needed to get a reasonably good editor with a sense of comedy.

Any additional comments?

I just didn't like it. Maybe you will. Go ahead and try, but its not a recommendation from me.

I like British Humor. It is both more "absurd" than American humor and more "intellectual" than American humor. And it seems to go far less often for the cheap joke. And this series is a quintessential example of the best of British Humor. It is well scripted with clever comic situations and brilliant word play. It has a cast of superb professionals who know how to deliver radio lines. It uses its music and sound effects well. It pays attention to its continuity. One of the strengths, of course, is that British TV and Radio tend to be "compact" in that they have short annual runs. But this also means that the creator (in this case the brilliant John Finnemore, a writer in the mold of Spike Milligan) retains control and the show has a single vision. Listen to ALL of this in order. Its great.
