Most people dream of building their own custom home, customized to fit their lifestyle perfectly. But for Ryan Haag, life as a US Navy Officer makes building a custom home impossible. But a change in life circumstances suddenly gives Ryan the chance to build the home of his dreams. All of Ryan's preparation is put to the test as he navigates the complicated process of building a custom home from scratch on a virgin piece of land and with a limited budget.

Read this book before building a house!
Revisado: 06-20-24
Ryan Haag has done an excellent job of writing, and reading, a gripping account of everything he and his family went through trying to bring their Forever Home into reality. This is not a how-to guide for custom home building, but an excellent case study of Murphy's Law; What can go wrong will go wrong, and at the worst possible time. Despite many setbacks, delays, dishonest professionals, unexpected expenses, and personal tragedy, everything manages to work out in the end. But this cautionary tale is a valuable reminder to the rest of us that we should hope for the best, but plan for the worst if we decide to build our own houses. I had no idea it could be this complicated!
Ryan, my condolences for your loss, and for all the frustrations you and your family went through. Having recently visited the Hampton Roads region, I commend your choice of places to settle!

Historia
The Battles of Lexington and Concord, Bunker Hill, the Declaration of Independence, Washington crossing the Delaware, Saratoga, and the final surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown - these are the scenes that stir the soul of many an American. But to an Englishman, they do no such thing. This Henty novel retells these stirring tales, but from a different perspective, helping listeners learn how the other side viewed this miraculous triumph of freedom that inspires millions throughout the world still today.

There are two sides to every story.
Revisado: 04-28-24
This was a fantastic story told from the opposite side we Americans always hear from. I really appreciate that it was written by a 19th Century Englishman, much closer in time to the Revolution than we are. His perspective, and the lack of a modern spin, is valuable for those who wish to better understand all the people of that time, not just the winners.
The narrator also did a great job. He made the story engaging and the characters distinctive.

Historia
Modernity developed only in the West - in Europe and North America. Nowhere else did science and democracy arise; nowhere else was slavery outlawed. Only Westerners invented chimneys, musical scores, telescopes, eyeglasses, pianos, electric lights, aspirin, and soap. The question is, why? Unfortunately, that question has become so politically incorrect that most scholars avoid it. But acclaimed author Rodney Stark provides the answers in this sweeping new look at Western civilization.

Everyone should read this book!

I can not recommend this book enough. It dispels many of the falsehoods we have been taught about history with undisputable facts and clear logic.
