Great story telling!
Revisado: 02-24-24
The author can tell a story and build the depth of the characters as time went on.
kept me interested the whole.
One thing I disliked was that the vikings were despicable. It made it difficult to root for any of then. They justify their horrid actions in the name of violent God's.
The author realized this and did not spend any time trying to humanize the characters. He let the reader decide who to root for.
As far as the narration I do not understood the negative reviews. I thought he was excellent! He did not over act or put his interpretation of the tone of the scene into the voices. He read the story using clear distinctions in character's voices. When the story is this good you do not need the narrator over acting.
I will look for other Peter Gibbons novels.

They grow hungry, homicidal, and suicidal. Then along comes the Popcorn King, a jiving, rhyming creature formed by blue-white lightning, with four arms and a popcorn bucket on its head.

Definitely not a favorite:(
Revisado: 01-10-23
I am so glad I did not listen to this book first by this author.
Joe R Lansdale is one of my favorite authors and I have listened to 6 other books by him and enjoyed them all. Creative story, interesting characters and funny, unique dialog.
This one was terrible. In the author's note at the end Joe says when he finished the book he didn't like it and thought it was a flop. I can see why he felt this way.
The story was just plain dumb and uninteresting. Just like most B movies.
The author stated it wasn't until after the good reviews by many people that he realized how much the book was appreciated.
He knew he wrote a turd that didn't work. I just think a lot of people like turds;)

Great story. Kept my interest. It was a great twist on Japanese culture and honor.
Add in demons, ghosts, ogres and one of my absolute favorite narrators.....what's not to like:)

Great Read
Revisado: 10-18-21
New to this author and discovered quite by accident I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
It was almost too gruesome in parts but the characters and their humor made it more palatable.
This was probably the first audio book I listened in full without losing some interest along the way.
I enjoyed it all the way thru and was not disappointed by the ending.
Narration was exceptional!
Will be seeking out this author and narrator more often.
