Historia
Under attack from without and within, Jherako teeters on the brink. Vaanvorn Thundred, suddenly in possession of a throne he never expected to inherit, will do anything to pull his kingdom from the edge, even if it means striking a marriage bargain with the formidable Faa’Cris. But a skycrawler opens Vorn’s eyes to realities outside his world, and his limits are tested. Lady Valiriana has one goal when she is sent out from Deversoria: prove this Jherakan king, the one his people call the Errant, unworthy of an alliance with any Faa’Cris.

Romantic fantasy with Wonder Woman vibes
Revisado: 04-14-25
Helloooo Vaanvorn! Absolutely adored the male narration on this. Loved the accent the narrator gave Vaanvorn & his narration made the character a properly swoon worthy love interest.
Enjoyed getting more lore for this space opera though this particular story reads more like a romantic fantasy. Best read in publication order to avoid spoilers.
The Faa’Cris feel like a fun mashup of a nun’s convent and the Amazons in Wonder Woman.
Narration was great, excellent themes of addressing inherent bias in oneself all mixed into a well paced romantic fantasy package.

I listened to a day on my morning commute. Definitely gave me a thirst to dig in deeper. I grabbed another title by Jackie Hill Perry after enjoying this for a few days.

What an ending!
Revisado: 12-02-22
I confess for the first 1/3 of the book I started to grow weary of Marco’s sulking / resisting growing feelings for someone. There were moments I thought bring me more rhinnocks! Overall this was a well paced second installment to this story & I’m excited for the next book. What an epic space opera!

Excellent YA epic fantasy
Revisado: 05-28-22
I think I loved Jalie more because of the audiobook. I suspect I would have read her words in a more callous tone than the narrator portrayed her.
Schade has an engaging world of political intrigue perfect for a YA audience. Themes of forgiveness (for oneself), grief and compassion are strewn seamlessly through an engaging plot of duty.
My favorite character is Kovi and my favorite scene was dragon riding.
Suitable (but not exclusively) for teen readers.

Loved it even more!
Revisado: 04-17-22
I read this book in physical form and really enjoyed it; however, the audiobook made me love it even more! The narrator’s delivery of Aoife with an accent makes her more likeable to me as a reader.
The Irish influence used to develop this fantasy world comes across much clearer in the audiobook.
For fans of fantasy with an Irish flare, complete with morally gray pirates. Declan will forever be my favorite snarky character.

Revisado: 04-17-22
Read this as I was digging deep for my personal workplace purpose. Found quite a bit of clarity as the Lord spoke to me through this book.
Thankful for people like Jordan Raynor who remind those of us called to edify God in our secular jobs how much purpose there is in glorifying God by working hard and with integrity.

Historia
There are three rules in Black River Falls: Don’t break curfew unless you want the monsters to find you. Don’t ask questions, no matter what. And when someone goes missing, don’t go looking. Joey Barnes obeyed those rules, until the day her mother vanished without a trace. She’s spent two years secretly hunting for clues, and she’s discovered plenty of things that don’t make sense, even for Black River Falls.

Thoroughly enjoyable
Revisado: 04-17-22
I haven’t read a middle grade book in years. What a delight! I found myself wondering how the author would explain the mystery and enjoyed every second as the story unfurled. CJ Redwine is an autobuy author for me and this story reminded me why. Vibrant characters, seamless world building & an engaging plot make this a fun read for older children and grandparents alike.
The narrator also did an exceptional job. I forgot several times it was a single narrator for all the different voices. She immerses you in the story with no thought to how well she executed the drama. 👏

What a delight. Her dramatic performance of this book made it such an enjoyable read. I’d love to have her do Northanger Abbey or Persuasion as well. Exceptional performance.
