Not Going to Leave You Feeling Good
Revisado: 08-06-18
For a debut novel (which I believe per The New Yorker's review it is), the book is awesome! However, the bulk of the story reminded me of the doldrums of The Goldfinch when the protagonist and Boris were perpetually jazzed in the outskirts of Las Vegas during their middle school years. But if that part of The Goldfinch did it for you, by all means, download this book too!

Historia
Labeled variously a realistic story of whaling, a romance of unusual adventure and eccentric characters, a symbolic allegory, and a drama of heroic conflict, Moby Dick is first and foremost a great story. It has both the humor and poignancy of a simple sea ballad, as well as the depth and universality of a grand odyssey.

Maybe Just Get a Hard-copy?
Revisado: 08-06-18
I like the idea of reading Moby Dick as it is undeniably beautifully written, but there's so much information and jargon about whaling (not to mention a million asides) that I find the novel really difficult to follow. Perhaps a hard copy of the book would be better as it would allow the reader to pause more seamlessly or look at the footnotes? Or maybe this is yet another classic that is heralded by all, but actually read by few. I'd check out an abridged version if you're interested.

Historia
Greta Gleissner, a longtime professional dancer, dreamed her whole life of becoming a Rockette. Then she became one and she fell into the grips of a powerful eating disorder that began poison her life from the inside out. Something Spectacular is Gleissner's raw, personal chronicle of the devastating effects bulimia exacts upon her life during her time as a Rockette. As her disorder takes over, she begins to lead a dual life: happy-go-lucky on the outside; tortured by obsessive, self-destructive voices on the inside

Great Support Book for Recovering Bulimics
Revisado: 08-06-18
Gleissner's memoir tells it like it is without glorification or gratuitousness, and Pearlman's voice really helps to convey the sort of character I imagined Gleissner to be based upon her own characterization. Parts of the book felt vague if not discarded -whatever became of her journey with her sexuality or her ability to deal with her past traumatic experiences?- however, overall, the book suggests hope not only for Gleissner but anyone who has ever combated an eating disorder and wanted "to win."

What does it mean when a fictional hero takes a journey? Shares a meal? Gets drenched in a sudden rain shower? Often, there is much more going on in a novel or poem than is readily visible on the surface - a symbol, maybe, that remains elusive, or an unexpected twist on a character - and there's that sneaking suspicion that the deeper meaning of a literary text keeps escaping you. In this practical and amusing guide to literature, Thomas C. Foster shows how easy and gratifying it is to unlock those hidden truths.

Entertaining Textbook!

This book sheds some excellent light upon literary analysis whether you're a veteran teacher, graduate student, or novice reader. The only thing I don't like is when the reader lapses into an affected voice when reading aloud Mansfield's "The Garden Party."
