Historia
Between 1980 and 1988 on BBC television and radio, the exploits of the Rt Hon Jim Hacker MP (Paul Eddington) - later Prime Minister - kept the British nation enthralled. Helped - and hampered - by his diligent Permanent Secretary Sir Humphrey Appleby (Nigel Hawthorne) and his Principle Private Secretary Bernard Woolley (Derek Fowlds), Hacker and his department became synonymous with government bureaucracy and administrative double dealing.

Brilliant, and still pertinent, political satire
Revisado: 11-12-22
My comfort listen. These episodes will keep us entertained for many decades. Reveal with wit and universality the political machinery and we wouldn't have The Thick of It, In the Loop, or Veep without this series. Fantastic performances, even without the visual part. A joy to listen to.

Historia
In 2012, Nobel Prize winning scientist Jennifer Doudna hit upon an invention that will transform the future of the human race: an easy-to-use tool that can edit DNA. Known as CRISPR, it opened a brave new world of medical miracles and moral questions. It has already been deployed to cure deadly diseases, fight the coronavirus pandemic of 2020 and make inheritable changes in the genes of babies. But what does that mean for humanity?

Clarifying and inspiring
Revisado: 06-02-22
After Leonardo, Jobs, Einstein, and the rest, Walter Isaacson proves yet again his ability to systematically approach one person's life's achievements and provide the reader (listener) with all the historical context to aporeciate its impact, importance, and scale. As fascinating as it is illuminating. Great performance by Kathe Mazur. An essential read or listen and thoroughly recommended.

Historia
Sleep is one of the most important aspects of our life, health and longevity and yet it is increasingly neglected in 21st century society, with devastating consequences: every major disease in the developed world - Alzheimer's, cancer, obesity, diabetes - has very strong causal links to deficient sleep. Until very recently, science had no answer to the question of why we sleep, or what good it served, or why its absence is so damaging to our health. Compared to the other basic drives in life - eating, drinking and reproducing - the purpose of sleep remained elusive.

Important read for better quality of life
Revisado: 05-23-22
Happy with the reader and the contents, of course, too. A book worth reading and giving out to people in your life. Sleep has been underappreciated and misunderstood so long that this will have a profound effect on your relationship with it. Many important lessons for you and yours.

Historia
This is the first volume in a bold new series that tells the stories of all peoples, connecting historical events from Europe to the Middle East to the far coast of China, while still giving weight to the characteristics of each country. Susan Wise Bauer provides both sweeping scope and vivid attention to the individual lives that give flesh to abstract assertions about human history. This narrative history employs the methods of "history from beneath" - literature, epic traditions, private letters, and accounts - to connect kings and leaders with the lives of those they ruled.

A great balance of clarity and detail
Revisado: 09-16-21
Enjoyed it a lot, a chronological overview of major cultures and the developments happening in parallel in different geographical locations. Especially useful for those who already love history.
Very clearly and proficiently narrated, too.
Recommended.

Historia
With commanding skill, Thomas R. Martin tells the remarkable and dramatic story of how a tiny, poor, and threatened settlement grew to become, during its height, the dominant power in the Mediterranean world for 500 years. Encompassing the period from Rome's founding in the eighth century BC through Justinian's rule in the sixth century AD, he offers a distinctive perspective on the Romans and their civilization by employing fundamental Roman values as a lens through which to view both their rise and spectacular fall.

Historia
The U.S. scientific community has long led the world in research on such areas as public health, environmental science, and issues affecting quality of life. Our scientists have produced landmark studies on the dangers of DDT, tobacco smoke, acid rain, and global warming. But at the same time, a small yet potent subset of this community leads the world in vehement denial of these dangers.

Essential read.

Should be part of school curriculum. A challenging, but all the more important read that enhances critical thinking and resilience, and shines a light on manipulation, spin, and propaganda techniques that everyone should be aware of to resist them. Fantastic achievement of both authors.

Historia
Leonardo da Vinci created the two most famous paintings in history, The Last Supper and the Mona Lisa. But in his own mind, he was just as much a man of science and engineering. With a passion that sometimes became obsessive, he pursued innovative studies of anatomy, fossils, birds, the heart, flying machines, botany, geology, and weaponry.

Superb.
Revisado: 05-17-20
My appreciation of Leonardo has grown almost e ponentially with each wonderful detail the author reveals. A fantastic achievement, wonderfully narrated by Mr Alfred Molina, who adds an Italian flair to all the personal and place names. Had to study and take a closer look at the reproductions of Leonard's work again and again, and appreciate them in a new light. The same is true for appreciating everyday objects and phenomena, like the flowing water in a nearby stream while walking my dog, studying his movement, or the light refractions in and around a fruit bowl. An essential read for all generations. For all of humanity.
