Nothing of substance
Revisado: 09-11-24
I’ve always admired Gloria Vanderbilt’s artistic and sartorial accomplishments, but I feel this overly imaginative, fantasy based portrayal of male dominance and female subjugation between a married aristocrat and his prostitute-concubine tedious and ludicrous. The narration seemed awkward and pretentious from a woman who sounded like a matronly private school etiquette tutor with an affected accent similar to Kate Hepburn. I couldn’t tolerate it beyond chapter 3.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Couldn’t be better
Revisado: 12-04-23
This was a wonderful Audible book opportunity. I couldn’t wait for quiet time to resume listening. The characters were spot on developed and believable. 6:30 was my personal favorite and could support a prequel of his own. The series on Apple has been extremely enjoyable as well. As with all good books, this is one you’ll want to listen to again.

In the spring of 2020, Lara’s three daughters return to the family's orchard in Northern Michigan. While picking cherries, they beg their mother to tell them the story of Peter Duke, a famous actor with whom she shared both a stage and a romance years before at a theater company called Tom Lake. As Lara recalls the past, her daughters examine their own lives and relationship with their mother, and are forced to reconsider the world and everything they thought they knew.

So good it deserves two listens….
Revisado: 10-30-23
Ann Patchett has once again woven a story so utterly human, touching and believable. The details are extraordinary, and we know Who is in the details. I also appreciate the world’s most perfect narrator who brings every detail to life. I could see Ms. Streep as Lara in my mind’s eye. I’m sure others experienced this wonderful benefit too. The cadence and voices were perfect. I’m looking forward to a movie - the cinematography would be stunning.

Historia
In The Diana Chronicles, you will meet a formidable female cast and understand as never before the society that shaped them: among them, Diana's sexually charged mother, her bad-girl sister-in-law, Fergie, and, most formidable of them all, her mother-in-law, the Queen. Add Camilla Parker-Bowles, the ultimate "other woman" into this combustible mix, and it's no wonder that Diana broke out of her royal cage into celebrity culture, where she found her own power and used it to devastating effect.

Such thorough research!
Revisado: 10-01-23
Ms. Brown provides an incredibly well researched and highly detailed account of the Princess’ life, both before and after her marriage. This is a truly deep dive into the royal family’s psyche as well as all the supporting members and staff involved in their lives. When I was a young woman, only six months younger than the princess, I watched the royal wedding instead of going to work that day. Years later, I laid in bed watching the reporting of her death, sobbing uncontrollably, feeling as if I had lost my own sister. That is how well we felt we knew the Prince and Princess. Tina Brown dispels rumors and lies; she outlines psychological idiosyncrasies that explain unfortunate motivations and disastrous decisions by everyone involved.

Truly a Listening Feast
Revisado: 07-01-23
I’ve read Hemingway novels again and again, and they change for me with each reading based on my own like experiences, but listening while I manage other tasks, makes the tasks so much more enjoyable. This has excellent narration, but I have not listened to others, earlier narrations. I am now on to enjoying The Pilot Fish and the Rich….

Historia
A poignant look at the disillusionment and angst of the post-World War I generation, The Sun Also Rises introduces two of Hemingway’s most unforgettable characters: Jake Barnes and Lady Brett Ashley. The story follows the flamboyant Brett and the hapless Jake as they journey from the wild nightlife of 1920s Paris to the brutal bullfighting rings of Spain with a motley group of expatriates. In his first great literary masterpiece, Hemingway portrays an age of moral bankruptcy, spiritual dissolution, unrealized love, and vanishing illusions.

Hemingway’s picturesque writing is always amazingly good, and I’ve enjoyed listening rather than reading after all these years. Highly recommend. William Hurt’s narration reminded me why he has always been a favorite of mine.

Delightful and charming
Revisado: 04-14-22
Bon Jour! I’ve been anticipating a two week visit to Paris and the Provence countryside this Fall. Naturally, I’m reading, watching and listening to everything I can find about France. This book is beautifully written and has many moments of charm, humor, and brilliant insight. I’m not nearly so worried about my faltering and grossly inadequate French language skills even with daily lessons s. I will simply shrug when I get it wrong. This book has made me excited about visiting the country and the author has given me many exact locations to discover and enjoy. The narration is lilting and although both are Australian, the French accent and pronunciation are quite good. This one will get a second listen.

Historia
Like so many others, David Lebovitz dreamed about living in Paris ever since he first visited the city in the 1980s. Finally, after a nearly two-decade career as a pastry chef and cookbook author, he moved to Paris to start a new life. Having crammed all his worldly belongings into three suitcases, he arrived, hopes high, at his new apartment in the lively Bastille neighborhood.

Stilted and uninspired
Revisado: 04-14-22
I am visiting Paris for several weeks in the Fall and want to know more about the French Life from a resident’s perspective. This book does not give one a good impression of the French people, their lifestyle or their capital city. The anecdotal chapters are somewhat informational on what to expect, but mostly if one is going to live there day to day. The more unpleasant aspect though is that the narrator sounds almost artificial and his speech is quite meh-can-eh-cull. I can’t finish this one and will try to return it for a credit.
