Historia
Mercer Mann, a popular writer from Camino Island, is back on the beach, marrying her boyfriend, Thomas, in a seaside ceremony. Bruce Cable, infamous owner of Bay Books, performs the wedding. Afterward, Bruce tells Mercer that he has stumbled upon an incredible story. Mercer desperately needs an idea for her next novel, and Bruce now has one. The true story is about Dark Isle, a sliver of a barrier island not far off the North Florida coast. It was settled by freed slaves three hundred years ago, and their descendants lived there until 1955, when the last one was forced to leave.

Whoopi in my ear is not fun
Revisado: 10-20-24
I like Whoopi as an actress, but her voice in my earbuds for long narration was like listening to a buzzsaw. I had to give up.

Narration was SUCH a dissapointment!
Revisado: 10-20-24
Why would a publisher hire Jefferson Mays to narrate an audiobook and then NOT have him do voices and accents? He is a Tony Winning actor noted for doing solo pieces with TONS of characters! It was a very lackluster narration even without the voices. I could not tell characters apart. The Brooklyn cop, the southern lead and all the other characters sounded the same. I gave up on this one. The series is fun and not to be taken seriously, so why was this narration done so bone dry?

So original and unpredictable!
Revisado: 05-15-24
The book is a slow simmer, but once the pot starts to boil, it roils. Don’t try to guess what will happen, just go along for the sad, funny, poignant, romantic and horrific ride. There is no book quite like this one.

This has long been one of my favorite books, and I am so glad I revisited it in audiobook form. John Lee was a delight, capturing the droll wit of the author and numerous wonderful characters with his voice.

Historia
Our brains do their best to help us out, but every so often they can be real assholes - having meltdowns, getting addicted to things, or shutting down completely at the worst possible moments. Your brain knows it's not good to do these things, but it can't help it sometimes - especially if it's obsessing about trauma it can't overcome. That's where this life-changing book comes in. With humor, patience, science, and lots of good-ole swearing, Dr. Faith explains what's going on in your skull, and talks you through the process of retraining your brain to respond appropriately....

I haven’t heard The Christopher Moore books with Euan narrating before, but I will have to go back and check them out! His voices are so uncanny in how different they are, and he just gets the timing of Moore’s comedy.

Borders on being a performance
Revisado: 11-30-19
Not only do the narrators take on alternate chapters, but in passages of dialogue between the two main characters, they read back and forth. It was a technique I enjoyed a lot.
Christine Lakin in particular was outstanding. Effortlessly taking on dozens of characters, with all voices sounding utterly natural and unforced.

Historia
All creatives are cursed. It's the subtle kind of curse. It's the kind you might not notice until you're 46 years old at a desk job wondering why you let the best years of your life slip away. It's the kind that keeps you paralyzed at 18 when you know you have something special to offer the world but everyone says you are too young.

No stretched out filler!
Revisado: 01-05-19
This book is so dense, that my only complaint is that with the audio book, I don’t have enough time to let an idea float in my brain before he’s onto a new one. So I got the kindle version as well. (I do wish there was a physical copy!)
That said, I’m still glad I got the audio book, because he is so enthusiastic. Sure, the recording isn’t super clean, but he is super entertaining.

the story was so so, but the narrator killed it. His voices were so distinctive I could always tell who was talking, and his narration made the story more engrossing than it probably deserved.
