A very important book that questions how we receive news, where it comes from, and its values. It frames the perspective of the media by showing how the players in the media are incentivized and not held accountable. It shows the effects of media exploitation perpetuated by a system of incentives that encourage bad behavior and ultimately lead to a reactionary world and real consequences despite pseudo catalysts.

This book felt more personal and powerful than his previous books and shows a lot growth in his ability to “story tell” or narrate a synthesis of research.

A remarkable read with many golden nuggets of wisdom. The first book that I've immediately listened to again upon completion.
That's saying a lot, as I am a person who generally hates reruns of books, shows, movies, etc.

I've known about the author for a while as he is often a guest on my favorite podcast, We Study Billionaires: The Investors Podcast. I must admit I was already a bit biased in liking his style and wit.

The story-telling is recounted in candor as the author is upfront about his ego, foibles, and idiosyncratic shortcomings. One of the biggest points he makes is the importance of choosing our heroes we aspire to be like as well as choosing our company. He gives homage to Warren Buffet for instilling the virtues of value investing and even more importantly, the virtues of character, helping him to set his own moral compass straight... or rather, straighter.

This story is also quite the bromance between him and Mohnish Pabrai, a very successful value investor (worth looking up) who is a fellow Buffet admirer and follower. The author clearly looks up to Mohnish and mentioned his name over 50 times in the book (I didn't actually count, but it is very frequent). The author recounts how he and Mohnish got to meet Buffet at a luncheon and how he learned to better model himself after Buffet by taking cues from Mohnish. One example was structuring his fund manager fees in the same way that Buffet had during Buffet's investing days. But, they also modeled Buffet in more subtle, non-investment related behaviors, such as being forthright and keeping company with those who are as well, and even steering clear of more enigmatic and ambiguous characters.

The ultimate lesson was about "compounding goodwill" or the idea that you receive more when you serve others. The author concludes the book with his personal transformation from aspiring to be a Gordon Gekko, to finding opportunities to give instead of taking.

I am no expert investor, but I do love to read/listen to business bestsellers. This is the first audible that I've listened to and thought: Wow, I am completely lost.

This might contain some top-notch information and lessons, but it is probably not for the casual investor or bestselling business book enthusiast unless you already understand these investing benchmarks.

This is a highly technical book. I think if you like Ben Graham's Intelligent Investor, then this might be up your alley.

Any additional comments?

This is definitely a lot more serious of a book than anticipated. A lot of it is a narrative of the author's self-growth. Dislikes: she defends being slutty then states that she is NOT promiscuous and then cites how she was so messed up that she woke up in compromising situations. Get over the bipolar, if you are for one-night stands why do you go to such lengths to state that you do NOT partake in this? NOT NEARLY AS FUNNY AS CHELSEA HANDLER. And wayyyy too many shout outs. But I like how she depicted the rough life of trying to make it as a comic. It was pretty good, but could be a lot better.

If you could sum up If You're so Smart, Why Aren't You Happy? in three words, what would they be?

Sharp, witty, and accessible

Any additional comments?

The best non-fiction book I have completed to date. If there is only one book I can convince my four best friends to read, this is hands-down the book. And shrinks, take note!

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

Least interesting was the death of the salesman analogies, and the fuller story.
Most interesting was chapter 9, with the Kenya drivers and MDs looking at MRIs and CAT scans

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

no

Any additional comments?

It was a bit on the lengthy side.
