Historia
"Spend each day trying to be a little wiser than you were when you woke up," Charles T. Munger advises in Poor Charlie’s Almanack. Originally published in 2005, this compendium of 11 talks, delivered by the legendary Berkshire Hathaway vice-chairman between 1986 and 2007, has become a touchstone for a generation of investors and entrepreneurs seeking to absorb the enduring wit and wisdom of one of the great minds of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Wisdom from somebody who had shown he has it.
Revisado: 11-01-24
This book is truly thought provoking.... important for those of us who wish to gain depth and wisdom. Some is rather heavy... trying to absorb it at the speed of an audio book was difficult. I suggest you be prepared to listen with attention, and to frequent stops to think about what you just heard.
This wonderful book, really needs to be read slowly (in a hard cover), but an audio version is certainly a good start.

Historia
This collection of 11 stories spans virtually the whole of Tolstoy's creative life. While each is unique in form, as a group they are representative of his style, and touch on the central themes that surface in War and Peace and Anna Karenina. Stories as different as "The Snowstorm", "Lucerne", "The Diary of a Madman", and "The Devil" are grounded in autobiographical experience. They deal with journeys of self-discovery and the moral and religious thought that characterizes Tolstoy's works of criticism and philosophy.

The worst organization ever on Audible!
Revisado: 09-26-24
The names of the 11 stories included in this book are not even listed! To make it worse, the only one you can go right to it's beginning is "The Snow Storm" (which starts on "Chapter 1" of the 21 chapters in the book), How Audible ordered and divided these stories among those chapters is their secret.
DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS BOOK! Oh, Audible... WAKE UP!

Historia
William Strauss and Neil Howe posit the history of America as a succession of generational biographies, beginning in 1584 and encompassing every one through the children of today. Their bold theory is that each generation belongs to one of four types and that these types repeat sequentially in a fixed pattern. The vision of Generations allows us to plot a recurring cycle in American history - a cycle of spiritual awakenings and secular crises - from the founding colonists through the present day and well into this millennium.

Need illustrations from hard copy book
Revisado: 03-13-23
The book seems fascinating. Unfortunately the authors make frequent references to names and events (from history) that leave me cold. Tried to use their support material (illustrations etc) to help my understanding, but they are not available for the audio book.

Life is getting better at an accelerating rate. Food availability, income, and life span are up; disease, child mortality, and violence are down all across the globe. Though the world is far from perfect, necessities and luxuries alike are getting cheaper; population growth is slowing; Africa is following Asia out of poverty; the Internet, the mobile phone, and container shipping are enriching people's lives as never before.

A different view of human history
Revisado: 05-24-22
Forget all those great battles and rulers! What was really important was the commercial interchange among people. Read at least the Introduction, and I’ll bet you finish the book.
The middle can (and probably should) be skipped as it is just too many pages without much to make you think, but overall this book may change the way you understand our history.

Historia
Guilty Admissions weaves together the story of an unscrupulous college counselor named Rick Singer, and how he preyed on the desperation of some of the country's wealthiest families living in a world defined by fierce competition, who function under constant pressure to get into the "right" schools, starting with preschool; nonstop fundraising and donation demands in the form of multi-million-dollar galas and private parties; and a community of deeply insecure parents who will do anything to get their kids into name-brand colleges in order to maintain their own A-list status.

Historia
Meet Harold Fry, recently retired. He lives in a small English village with his wife, Maureen, who seems irritated by almost everything he does, even down to how he butters his toast. Little differentiates one day from the next. Then one morning the mail arrives, and within the stack of quotidian minutiae is a letter addressed to Harold in a shaky scrawl from a woman he hasn’t seen or heard from in twenty years. Queenie Hennessy is in hospice and is writing to say goodbye.

Revisado: 09-06-19
There are few books that grip me as this one did. The long tails of the mistakes of the principal characters make a happy ending impossible.
If you're not too near the end of your life, this story may motivate you to adjust your course.

Historia
In 2014, Theranos founder and CEO Elizabeth Holmes was widely seen as the next Steve Jobs: a brilliant Stanford dropout whose startup “unicorn” promised to revolutionize the medical industry with its breakthrough device, which performed the whole range of laboratory tests from a single drop of blood. Backed by investors such as Larry Ellison and Tim Draper, Theranos sold shares in a fundraising round that valued the company at more than $9 billion, putting Holmes’s worth at an estimated $4.5 billion.

Such a lack of Wisdom...
Revisado: 09-06-19
Carreyrou is the guy who blew the lid, and as is to be expected, he writes about it very well.
I hope both the good and bad actors in this story will be remembered for what they did: As real-life heroes and villains.
I suspect such a mess was inevitable: Mixing: 1) the wish for a hyper-successful female entrepreneur, 2) the avoidance of the field's genuine experts, and 3) an excess dependence on lawyers, make this (or a similar tragedy) almost inevitable.

So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand.

Historia
On the morning of April 26, 1986, Europe witnessed the worst nuclear disaster in history: the explosion of a reactor at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Soviet Ukraine. Dozens died of radiation poisoning, fallout contaminated half the continent, and thousands fell ill. In Chernobyl, Serhii Plokhy draws on new sources to tell the dramatic stories of the firefighters, scientists, and soldiers who heroically extinguished the nuclear inferno. He lays bare the flaws of the Soviet nuclear industry....

Revisado: 06-17-19
This is probably a great book for Historians.... But it wasn't for me: I listened to the first 2 hours but 1) simply couldn't keep track of the dozens of people with Russian & Ukrainian names, and 2) was disappointed to not be able to understand the "physics" underlying the accident.
