The Hidden Palace was the last place that Lei would ever consider home. The trauma and tragedy she suffered behind those opulent walls would plague her forever. She could not be trapped there with the sadistic king again, especially without Wren. The last Lei saw of the girl she loved, Wren was fighting an army of soldiers in a furious battle to the death. With the two girls torn apart and each in terrorizing peril, will they find each other again, or have their destinies diverged forever?

A beautifully written masterpiece with loveably flawed characters.

Just Okay
Revisado: 01-31-24
The first book in this series was incredible, but as the story progressed I found it becoming increasingly boring. There were a lot of moments in this book that felt like it was trying to do something similar to what Mockingjay accomplished, but didn’t quite understand how Mockingjay got there and the fallout that can happen after multiple traumas. I never understood why being Moon Chosen was a big deal, motivations didn’t always make sense, and man do I hate villain monologues. I appreciated the author’s delicacy and delivery of sexual trauma and disability, and I would certainly read more from this author.

Historia
Tamsyn Muir’s Gideon the Ninth unveils a solar system of swordplay, cut-throat politics, and lesbian necromancers. Her characters leap out of the audio, as skillfully animated as arcane revenants. The result is a heart-pounding epic science fantasy. Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse.

Fun. Not art, very gory, but 100% fun.

Disappointed
Revisado: 07-06-21
I wish I was exaggerating but I truly don’t know what happened in this book.
I can tell you snippets, words really, like necromancers, society, planetary system, locked door, key, murder - and I don’t even know how they all connect.
I was HIGHLY anticipating this book, and I’m super disappointed that I felt disjointed reading it. It was boring, which didn’t help the confusing and lackluster world building. I didn’t feel like the pitch of this book landed - “lesbian necromancers in space” is incredibly misleading. The romance isn’t really a huge part of the book, the necromancy wasn’t explained very well, and space was just a setting - nothing more.
And again, cursing/swearing does not make character development alone. The cursing just seemed unnatural and unnecessary in most of the scenes. It was lewd but not because the main character was lewd (they did nothing other than curse that was lewd).
