Historia
It begins on the shaded town square in a sleepy Southern town. A spirited seven-year-old has a brisk business at her lemonade stand. But the little girl’s pretty yellow dress can’t quite hide the ugly scar on her chest. Her latest customer, a bearded stranger, drains his cup and heads to his car, his mind on a boat he's restoring at a nearby lake. The stranger understands more about the scar than he wants to admit. And the beat-up bread truck careening around the corner with its radio blaring is about to change the trajectory of both their lives.

I was thoroughly engrossed in this story from beginning to end. It was at the same time heartbreaking and heartwarming and I'm now addicted to Martin's writing.

Historia
Charlie Finn had to grow up fast, living alone by age 16. Highly intelligent, he earned a life-changing scholarship to Harvard, where he learned how to survive and thrive on the outskirts of privileged society. That skill served him well in the cutthroat business world, as it does in more lucrative but dangerous ventures he now operates off the coast of Miami. Charlie tries to separate relationships from work.

An Engrossing and Moving Story
Revisado: 01-08-25
I hated to see this story end. The author was able to make me love a former drug dealer and to long to visit the people of Nicaragua. I especially loved the true last paragraph at the end that describes the authors inspiration for writing the novel. The audible version I listened to was read perfectly.

Historia
Women were there. For centuries, discussions of early Christianity have focused on male leaders in the church. But there is ample evidence right in the New Testament that women were actively involved in ministry, at the frontier of the gospel mission, and as respected leaders. Nijay Gupta calls us to bring these women out of the shadows by shining light on their many inspiring contributions to the planting, growth, and health of the first Christian churches.

A Different View of Women's Roles in the Church
Revisado: 12-29-24
I grew up under patriarchal teaching in the church and at home. This book caused me to rethink some of the doctrines I have been taught about women's roles and to understand more clearly the scriptural teaching about a woman's place in the body of Christ. I will need to reread the book in print form because listening to it read aloud by the author didn't give me enough time to process all of the arguments. I do recommend this book.

Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

A Story of Pain and Poverty in America
Revisado: 12-29-24
J.D. Vance told his family's hard story of addiction, poverty, and dysfunction without judgment and with love toward those who cared for him, especially his grandmother. He tells the story with hope and with gratitude for all the seemingly random people and opportunities provided throughout his life. This was an interesting memoir to hear read aloud by the author.

A Very Moving Memoir
Revisado: 07-29-24
I read this memoir on my Kindle and then downloaded it on Audible to hear Beth read her story in her own voice. It is a hard story in many ways but a moving and funny story, too. It's one of the best memoirs I've read in the past few months.

Historia
Among Christian devotional works, My Utmost for His Highest stands head and shoulders above the rest, with more than 13 million copies sold. But most listeners have no idea that Oswald Chambers' most famous work was not published until 10 years after his death. The remarkable person behind its compilation and publication was his wife, Biddy. And her story of living her utmost for God's highest is one without parallel.

Oswald and Biddy Chambers
Revisado: 06-03-24
I admire greatly the dedication Oswald and Biddy Chambers had to their Lord. I am currently rereading MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST. The authors writing style and reading voice often made it difficult for me to remain interested in the story.

Historia
Have you found that you can’t read the Bible without being sent back into a painful place? Have the scriptures been twisted to keep you in bondage? The real Jesus wants to set you free. In Untwisting Scriptures: Patriarchy and Authority, Book 2, Rebecca Davis addresses the hold that “patriarchal” parents have had over their adult children in the name of “children obey your parents” or “rebellion is the sin like witchcraft". A toxic faith needs to be deconstructed and rebuilt on the solid foundation of the true Lord Jesus Christ.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Seabiscuit was a runaway success, and Hillenbrand’s done it again with another true-life account about beating unbelievable odds. On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared....

Amazing Story of Human Resilience
Revisado: 02-02-21
I was absorbed in this story from beginning to end. Laura Hillenbrand is a great writer who painted an almost unbelievable story of pain, suffering, and degradation in a Japanese war camp. Yet the story is one of redemption and healing. I highly recommend listening to this inspiring story set in a historical era we can't afford to forget.
