Historia
Fresh out of rehab, Mallory Quinn takes a job as a babysitter for Ted and Caroline Maxwell. She is to look after their five-year-old son, Teddy. Mallory immediately loves it. She has her own living space, goes out for nightly runs, and has the stability she craves. And she sincerely bonds with Teddy, a sweet, shy boy who is never without his sketchbook and pencil. His drawings are the usual fare: trees, rabbits, balloons. But one day, he draws something different: a man in a forest, dragging a woman’s lifeless body.

Twisty and twisted
Revisado: 08-07-24
Twisty and twisted, but not especially well written. Author needs to practice “show, don’t tell.” Chocolate lava cakes…most people know what those are, so you don’t have to explain in great detail. A fish’s tale was described in context, so the detective didn’t need to explain further. There were several instances like that.
SPOILER ALERT:
I hate dumb narrators/main characters. The 21 year-old ex-addict thinks putting a video camera in a child’s bedroom is a good idea? Come on! She allows a new acquaintance to watch her babysitting charge at the swimming pool—knowing full well the kid can’t swim? Ugh.
Also, so many tropes! Hubby hits on babysitter and wants to run off with her? 🙄
I lived in Gilbert, WV for 4 years. I would be VERY surprised to learn there was a 10 acre farm somewhere in those hollers. Also, a town of 400 people, says the book, would DEFINITELY notice outsiders moving in.
Anyway, there were some interesting twists at the end that raised my review to 3 stars.

Historia
Bennie Rosato looks exactly like her identical twin, Alice Connolly, but the darkness in Alice's soul makes them two very different women. Or at least that's what Bennie believes, until she finds herself buried alive at the hands of her twin. Meanwhile, Alice takes over Bennie's life, impersonating her at work and even seducing her boyfriend in order to escape the deadly mess she has made of her own life. But Alice underestimates Bennie and the evil she has unleashed in her twin's psyche, as well as Bennie's determination to stay alive long enough to exact revenge.

Dialogue needed work.
Revisado: 12-30-21
I am not a big stickler on clever dialogue, but multiple character exclaimed, “I know, right?” multiple times in a row. It is a phrase I hate already, but hearing it multiple times in a row was especially grating.
I love the Scottoline books, but this one could stand some polishing.

Nothing unique or exceptional
Revisado: 06-06-21
None of the main characters are especially likable. I take that back, they’re all absolutely dreadful!
The plot, the twists, the consequences all feel familiar and unoriginal.
The end was pretty dissatisfying, even after the author dropped a real kicker of a final line. If the book had been written differently, the last line would have hit different too.
All this being said, I could NOT stop listening to it! Kudos to the voice actors/narrators on that one!

Disturbing AF—Listen at your own risk!
Revisado: 04-04-21
This book was the creepiest, most disturbing book I’ve listened to. It was addictive, but so disturbing that I had to turn it off late at night.
I kind of regret listening to it, and the narrator made it worse! She did a brilliant job of conveying the right vibes.

Solid 4.5 stars!
Revisado: 11-21-20
There was a bit of wordy drama and deep thinking throughout the book that I could have lived without. However the force of the jaw-drops that this book elicited from me greatly outweighs the slow parts.
Solid 4.5 stars!

Disappointing from Baldacci
Revisado: 11-10-20
I love the Will Robie/Jessica Riel books, and I enjoy the Amos Decker books too, but this crossover was dull. It felt like the last 3 hours of the book were spent wrapping the thing up! I think there was—at most—one tense moment in the last hours of the book.
Not Baldacci’s best work.

Suspenseful, but lots of teenage drama
Revisado: 08-13-20
Suspenseful throughout, but seriously excessive teenage drama. Main character is a bit melodramatic and eye roll-worthy. The end was total garbage. Perhaps the author had a deadline? I hate a decent book with a bad ending.

Melodramatic and Immature Relationships?
Revisado: 07-27-20
I really enjoy this series and the characters in it. I respect most of the developments of the characters, but the *drama* between Sara(h?) and Will during this book is gag-worthy! I get that Will is backwards and broken in his own way, but Sarah? She’s been married before, she’s an adult, and she overreacts to Will going undercover worse than a teenager.
Not the author’s best work.

Why sound effects?
Revisado: 04-13-20
I enjoy the series quite a bit, but I don’t need the sound effects for car chases, clattering downstairs, music, etc. Also, this narrator doesn’t do the best job of narrating female characters. It’s fine, but sometimes it takes me a bit longer to figure out dialogue because I have to realize a female is speaking.
Great books, I just wish the dramatic elements weren’t so prominent. The books should speak for their selves! : )
