Historia
An 11-year-old boy's violated corpse is found in a town park. Eyewitnesses and fingerprints point unmistakably to one of Flint City's most popular citizens. He is Terry Maitland, Little League coach, English teacher, husband, and father of two girls. Detective Ralph Anderson, whose son Maitland once coached, orders a quick and very public arrest. Maitland has an alibi, but Anderson and the district attorney soon add DNA evidence to go with the fingerprints and witnesses. Their case seems ironclad.

Always a good read (or listen)
Revisado: 01-11-25
I went into this book a little timidly. I am a huge Stephen King fan, reading myself into having the lights on at night as a teenager. I have recently become infatuated with his writing again, having listened to Fairy Tale and Holly. It was interesting listening to Holly in this book because it's not who she is in Holly. At any rate, this story is gripping from the get-go. I mean had me wondering if I was going to listen to this kind of gripping. But as always, Constant Reader, Mr. King lures you into his world of interesting characters and situations. The characters are real people doing real people lives, and you should join them on their quest to find the truth.

Historia
After Lucy is found wandering the streets, covered in her best friend Savvy’s blood, everyone thinks she is a murderer. Lucy and Savvy were the golden girls of their small Texas town: pretty, smart, and enviable. Lucy married a dream guy with a big ring and an even bigger new home. Savvy was the social butterfly loved by all, and if you believe the rumors, especially popular with the men in town. It’s been years since that horrible night, a night Lucy can’t remember anything about, and she has since moved to LA and started a new life.

Historia
Joe Dispenza, DC, has spent decades studying the human mind-how it works, how it stores information, and why it perpetuates the same behavioral patterns over and over. In the acclaimed film What the Bleep Do We Know!?, he began to explain how the brain evolves - by learning new skills, developing the ability to concentrate in the midst of chaos, and even healing the body and the psyche. Evolve Your Brain presents this information in depth, while helping you take control of your mind.

At the start, it was woo-woo
Revisado: 09-25-22
At the beginning of this book, as the author experiences a disabling injury, he "thinks" himself well. And I thought, that's pretty woo-woo. Then he states how others have accomplished healing themselves using similar tactics. I think what one really has to take away from this book is that while he may have been able to recover from this injury, I don't think I recall hearing the extent to his recovery - can he bend over without pain and touch his toes, twist, etc. As an RN, it was a nice refresher of brain anatomy and components. I wonder if those without a medical or science background will follow as easily. I kept waiting for the part where the author told ME how to relieve the osteoarthritis in my hand or my knee pain. With his background in deep meditation and his moneyed friends who help him recover in a sanctuary with a private pool, while another keeps his practice going, I wonder if others would be as successful. It was interesting and gives me food for thought (literally) but I've still no guidance as to how to get there. The narration was distracting, with a dragging "s" sound that I eventually got used to but was conscious of the entire book.

Historia
After graduating from Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, writer Kathleen Flinn returned with no idea what to do next, until one day at a supermarket she watched a woman loading her cart with ultraprocessed foods. Flinn's "chefternal" instinct kicked in: she persuaded the stranger to reload with fresh foods, offering her simple recipes for healthy, easy meals.

Loved to hear about growing enthusiasm
Revisado: 09-25-22
I really enjoyed Kathleen Flinn's first book, about going to Le Cordon Bleu. This one is close to home - and is inspiring to see how those who don't usually cook at home can transform their grocery lists into something delicious. I only wish this book had been narrated by the woman who did the first book. This narrator felt kind of snooty - I think it's her diction, but the other woman had me believing it was the author herself, with a lot of heartfelt emotion. This was a good listen anyway.

Makes me want/not want to go to culinary school
Revisado: 07-23-22
I really enjoyed this book. I didn't realize it had recipes in it until the narrator rattled off the first one. There's no sense in trying to decipher the recipe while she reads it - I downloaded and printed the ones I wanted. But the techniques are fascinating. This was written a while ago, and I wonder if the dishes prepared at the school are the same today. I looked forward every day to getting into my car and traveling to Paris during my commute.

A classic I didn't even know I had missed
Revisado: 07-23-22
I wasn't required to read this book in school as many are. And I thought since it's a classic, I probably should. So glad I did. Sissy Spacek makes this book come alive. Her fantastic voice just made the book for me. The writing so clear, I could picture this country county in the 30's; dusty, folksy, pies on the window sills... And the subject matter is definitely what needs to be continued today - tolerance and understanding - whether it's skin color, socioeconomic level, or injuries (visible or not) that leave you out of the mainstream.

To take a skeptical approach to American history is not to dabble in imaginative conspiracy theories; rather, it's to reframe your understanding of this great nation's past and actually strengthen your appreciation for what makes American history such a fascinating chapter in the larger story of Western civilization. And in this bold 24-lecture series, you can do just that.

Narration is a huge part of an audio book
Revisado: 03-20-21
...and this one was lacking. This book is so full of interesting anecdotes, stories, facts, myth-busting - and yet a lot of that gets lost narration. I found myself drifting off while listening. This is really important information because a lot of what we're taught is not correct - and it really needs to be. I wish this book would be re-recorded. It's not often in modern day conversation - or lecture - that there is the repeated "thus", "furthermore", and other words that might be used in a written form, but sound very peculiar when listening. I guess what I'm trying to say that the delivery was really dry and this content could be much more interesting if it weren't so.

Historia
By the time he was 27 years old, Kwame Onwuachi had opened - and closed - one of the most talked-about restaurants in America. He had launched his own catering company with $20,000 that he made from selling candy on the subway, yet he’d been told he would never make it on television because his cooking wasn’t “Southern” enough. In this inspiring memoir about the intersection of race, fame, and food, he shares the remarkable story of his culinary coming-of-age.

What a great story
Revisado: 03-20-21
Kwame relates his story in a very conversational way, like he's just sitting across the table from you with a beer telling his story. He didn't have and easy time as a child, and very honestly discusses his challenges, failures and successes. I think his drive and vision are remarkable, and I think he could be successful at anything he set his mind to. I very much enjoyed his story.

Historia
In our unique genomes, every one of us carries the story of our species - births, deaths, disease, war, famine, migration, and a lot of sex. But those stories have always been locked away - until now. Who are our ancestors? Where did they come from? Geneticists have suddenly become historians, and the hard evidence in our DNA has completely upended what we thought we knew about ourselves. Acclaimed science writer Adam Rutherford explains exactly how genomics is completely rewriting the human story - from 100,000 years ago to the present.

Very interesting listen
Revisado: 03-20-21
This was really an interesting read because it starts at the start - like we would expect a story to - and ends with the modern genome. It was informative on how to interpret the gene testing that many companies are offering by stating the countries that light up with your genetic test are the people who share your DNA NOW, not necessarily in the past. I think that's something that people aren't aware of. I also like the "I'm related to Charlemagne" argument that some people brag about, and how the reasoning is substantiated that we all are. I will listen to some other stuff, but will most likely go back and listen to this again. The only frustration I had was that every time I got into the car, the whole book started over. I can't tell you how many times I heard "This is Audible"..... The author makes this a very relatable book and reads it like he's just having a conversation with you. Very well done.

I really enjoyed this course. The author is enthusiastic about the topic and is enjoyable to listen to. As I was going through this course, I kept wishing she had narrated a couple of the other Great Courses - information I was really interested in but the narration made slogging through difficult. I will look for more of her courses!
