Historia
Nina once bought into the idea that her fancy liberal arts degree would lead to a fulfilling career. When that dream crashed, she turned to stealing from rich kids in LA alongside her wily Irish boyfriend, Lachlan. Nina learned from the best: Her mother was the original con artist, hustling to give her daughter a decent childhood despite their wayward life. But when her mom gets sick, Nina puts everything on the line to help her, even if it means running her most audacious, dangerous scam yet.

Entertaining, not exceptionally deep
Revisado: 04-05-21
I had no expectations for this book other than it being well reviewed.
It was more entertaining than expected, i didn’t want to stop listening.
A few twists and turns And somewhat of a “happy ending”
Only complaint is that some of the hard life issues and logistics were glossed over in an unrealistic way imo. Not enough to be outlandish but definitely enough to be like mehhh could things really happen like this?
Anyway overall, entertaining and enjoyable. Would recommend

From the best-selling author of The Things We Cannot Say, Before I Let You Go, and the upcoming The Warsaw Orphan, comes a poignant post-WWII novel that explores the expectations society places on women set within an engrossing family mystery that may unravel everything once believed to be true.

Dark, involves depression (PPD) And abortion

I enjoyed another book by this author and decided to give this a try.
This really tugged at my heart.
True feeling story about family dynamics, women’s mental health including postpartum depression and gender roles in the 1960s and beyond. Navigating family life with aging parents with declining mental faculties.
Not every story has a happy ending, but everything changes. Would recommend, though i definitely cried.

Historia
Since she was nine years old, Alina Dziak knew she would marry her best friend, Tomasz. Now 15 and engaged, Alina is unconcerned by reports of Nazi soldiers at the Polish border, believing her neighbors that they pose no real threat, and dreams instead of the day Tomasz returns from college in Warsaw so they can be married. But little by little, injustice by brutal injustice, the Nazi occupation takes hold, and Alina’s tiny rural village, its families, are divided by fear and hate. Then, as the fabric of their lives is slowly picked apart, Tomasz disappears.

Pleasantly surprised
Revisado: 08-26-20
I got this in a bogo sale, and totally on a whim.
It’s not a genre or author i lean towards but was pleasantly surprised to follow along with this journey.
While somewhat of a “sappy” idyllic love story in some ways, it was countered by the very real day to day and lifetime struggles that one can expect in the Real world.
Would recommend, and i enjoyed the narrator.

Historia
The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling force and acuity. It begins with a boy. Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

impressive narrator, beautiful book
Revisado: 09-27-19
It's almost hard for me to write a review, I feel like I'm emerging from a vivid dream. This book was so well written and narrated that I truly became engulfed in the story of theo. The sadness, love, obsession, youth, everything about this story felt like reminiscing.
All the 5 star reviews are right, though slow and somewhat sad at times, the book is wholly worth your time. I Will be recommending this to friends.

the closure I always wanted with handmaid's tale
Revisado: 09-20-19
great book, writing similar to oryx and crake series.
ending similar to handmaid's, which is necessary but I don't love really.
I am curious to know how they will proceed with show, but I loved this book. well done again.

Could have ended better
Revisado: 08-23-19
it felt like the build up and story was strong, but the middle felt long and end felt short.
I feel like I need to go back and listen to the end because it was like I missed something
also, I hate Cathy Linton. she's an @sshole, that is all.

ughhhh narrator's voice and speech patterns
Revisado: 05-01-19
if I wasn't committed to finishing the book (lazily) I would have returned it. The narrator has several speech sound issues (with her sh, ch, th sounds) and it drove me NUTS. her voice overall was annoying to me and I just didn't like her. fingers crossed that this is the last I'm forced to endure.
story was decent but also not as well written as the rest of slaughter's books.
