Historia
Hundreds of thousands of devotees will cheer the return of Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee. The Navajo policemen, are brought together by the death of a man on Ship Rock, almost 1700 feet above the desert floor. The fallen man had sprawled on the ledge under the peak of Ship Rock mountain for eleven years - visited only by the ravens who had picked his bones bare and scattered his rock-climbing gear. Through the memory of those who had known him, emerges an understanding of the fallen man, who had been given everything and found it was not enough.

The narrator's Navajo accent was really off... previous narrators set a higher, truer standard.

Historia
There's a saying in Barstow, California, a decaying city in the scorching Mojave desert . . . The Interstate here only goes in one direction: Away. But it's the only place where ex-LAPD detective Beth McDade, after a staggering fall from grace, could get another badge . . . and a shot at redemption. Over a century ago, and just a few miles further into the bleak landscape, a desperate stranger ended up in Calico, a struggling mining town, also hoping for a second chance.

Historia
Humanity is a dying breed, utterly reliant on artificial labor and service. When a domesticated robot gets a nasty little idea downloaded into its core programming, they murder their owner. The robot discovers they can also do something else they never did before: They can run away. Fleeing the household they enter a wider world they never knew existed, where the age-old hierarchy of humans at the top is disintegrating into ruins and an entire robot ecosystem devoted to human wellbeing is having to find a new purpose.

If Asimov Were Alive and Writing
Revisado: 11-12-24
Adriana Tchaikovsky is, in my opinion, the closest contemporary sci-fi author who consistently exceeds my eexpectations. Asimov is one of the gold standards of 20th century sci-fi and Tchaikovsky, especially in Service Model, feels like Asimov's heir apparent. This book fits into the Robot series alongside I,Robot, Bicentennial Man et.al. And remarkably, Tchaikovsky is an excellent narrator to boot.

Crispin Marlowe grew up in his brother’s shadow, but Hadrian is gone, and his grandmother - the Duchess of Delos - is dying. Answering her summons, Crispin takes off on what should be a routine flight to the ducal palace from the castle at Devil’s Rest. But he is flying into a trap. There are whispers of treachery among the duchess’s many daughters, rumors of hidden knives in the planet’s court...if he can even make it there.

Historia
The galaxy remembers Hadrian Marlowe as a hero: the man who burned every last alien Cielcin from the sky. They remember him as a monster: the devil who destroyed a sun, casually annihilating four billion human lives - even the emperor himself - against Imperial orders. But Hadrian was not a hero. He was not a monster. He was not even a soldier. Fleeing his father and a future as a torturer, Hadrian finds himself stranded on a strange, backwater world.

Unexpected Treasure
Revisado: 09-03-24
I no longer continue listening to books that don't grab my attention and interest. I'll return them if possible or archive them if not. Empire of Silence took me away from the start and I never left go.
By comparison, I made it through about 60%of Christopher Paolini's 'To Sleep in a Sea of Stars' and just stopped...sci-fi devolved into fantasmic nonsense.
Empire of Silence is, by comparison, expansive and coherent. the author has created an entire universe that is based on physical reality. Yes, the story, spanning distances of many light years depends upon FTL technology but described in reasonably scientific parameters.
It is the quality of the author's use of language, his multifaceted development of characters, and his truly grand story arc that are remarkable.
I immediately downloaded Book 1.5 and have started listening.

Historia
Since Anabelle’s mother left for Earth to care for her own ailing mother, her days in New Galveston have been spent at school and her nights at her laconic father’s diner with Watson, the family Kitchen Engine and dishwasher, as her only companion. When the Silence came, and communication and shipments from Earth to its colonies on Mars stopped, life seemed stuck in foreboding stasis until the night Silas Mundt and his gang attacked.

Took Me By Surprise
Revisado: 01-30-24
I was put off at first by the odd choice of time (1930's) and setting (Mars), but the quality of the writing, storyline, and narration allowed me to suspend disbelief. I suppose nearly all Sci Fi, requires that but this novel required double that. Worth the time and the credit.

Sci Fi Doesn't Get Much Better

The first in a trilogy that, in my decades of reading and listening to Sci Fi, is worthy of comparison to Verne, Wells, Asimov's, and Clark.
