The characters came alive and I miss them already. I love the way the authors unfolded the story from two voices/perspectives and evoked compassion. I appreciated learning more technical info about human sexual & gender identity and about bees and honey!

I was surprised by the love & beauty

I was only 4 yrs old when Baldwin wrote this. It holds up so well to speak to the ideals we hold for our democracy & the matters of race before us. His prose so nourishing; his depths of expressing love & beauty inspiring. I’m only sorry I didn’t read this sooner. Jesse Martin’s voice added to the eloquence.

Colson Whitehead never disappoints.

I chose this as my first book of the new year because I had confidence in this author. I am tempted to buy a hard copy just so that I might savor his beautifully crafted turns of phrases & insights. I learned so much, too.
And, Dion Graham is the best. I’ll look for his performances!

Engaging memoir bridges their story, our stories & my own

A memoir which educated me about parts of American history & culture (recent & long ago) and which tells a story so different from my own and yet helps me understand better my own story and how to tell it and the importance of doing so even if only for my own purposes.

Beautiful writing. I came to feel compassion for all the characters. I hat to hold them in my heart awhile before I can move on to another novel. Celeste Ng is a new author for me. Can’t wait to read her other books.

A "must-read" for people who describe selves as "white"

The lyrical prose engaged & inspired me. I learned important things about American history not in school texts. Coates' experience & perspective challenged my assumptions, deepened my understanding of the realities and history of African Americans and the artificial categories of race, & taught me more about the fierce love of a parent preparing his child to live fully and with keen awareness.

Timely insight

Like many, I was interested in learning about my fellow Americans in the post-Trump election. But also deeply personal as this is my paternal family culture only 2 generations earlier. I learned more about my own history. I appreciated Vance's honesty, compassionate insight, and critique. This is helpful in intercultural dialogue to build grater understanding & compassion in the face of vitriolic polarization.

Original Intent

This book is especially helpful for people like me attempting rely on High School US American History to navigate complicated political discussions including the Philosophy of supreme court using "original intent" as the basis for decisions regarding the constitution It was fascinating and illuminating to learn of the diversity of original intent in these first-generation leaders of our country. Thomas Jefferson thought the Constitution should be updated every 20 years in order to accommodate the changing needs and context of the population. Madison didn't even think that there needed to be a bill of rights as it wasn't enforceable. He didn't imagine that the Supreme Court would have the role of enforcing those rights. It is very interesting to hear how they managed the politics regarding these very important decisions. I think every American should read this book. It's very accessible!
