Though this book lays out what Google does (a company with perhaps no comparison) a lot of the principles are generally applicable. I was pleasantly surprised by this and have found several applications for my own Eng org.

The book leads strong with some tips about how to being prepping in general and the philosophy behind that way of life.

However some of the chapters are more of just an appendix of sorts that are better suited for a physical book I think.

Also the author recommends things near the end of the book that, if followed, basically means your whole life is dedicated to prepping. (Owning a large community home that you and other preppers keep well stocked year-round, while practicing basic prepper skills around the clock, and somehow having employment capabilities though he recommends in living somewhere VERY remote.)

Near the end prepping felt more like a rich man (or woman's) hobby. I think the book could have used a "shoe-string budget prepping" guide to do the best you can with what you have as a young professional.

Basically the only individuals that could follow this to the letter are those that have an endless stream of sizeable income, and large amounts of free time.

All that being said though, this book really got me interested in prepping in general as a kind of life philosophy. I get it now.

Summary: Try to use your phone less than you do and you'll probably be happier, and there has been research to prove it.

Everything else in this book is kind of a derivative of that.

This was really refreshing for me to read. It seems like modern thought share in the business literature is how to raise money quick or grow ASAP with secret recipes for success. This book isn’t about that.

Very common sense stuff that is easily overlooked is in this book. Really useful rules of thumb, like salespeople won’t make a return on investment for their first year, so be prepared to carry them. Or: Always be ready if a customer doesn’t pay because it will happen. So always have enough cash in the bank in case they fall through.

Another: Don’t hire friends, it clouds your judgement big time.

All of these examples are demonstrated through the Author’s own personal life experiences, giving them more credibility.

Good stuff. Will re-read.

Similar principles that around found in Rich Dad Poor Dad, though it’s a bit more general and lessons are described here in allegorical form. It’s pretty simplistic but I suppose that also means it’s easy to grasp.

Got me to think about “business value” in a new light. Also has a very interesting stance on bureaucracy as a form of business value and institutional memory. As a millennial trained to hate bureaucracy in all its forms this matured my view on the issue I think. Anyway, good quick listen. Will likely need to listen to again later.
The book also made a useful distinction between customer value and business value. That while often overlapping these can be distinct things.

What made the experience of listening to What I Learned Losing a Million Dollars the most enjoyable?

Would you be willing to try another book from the authors? Why or why not?

not really. It was alright, but I felt it didn't really have a ton of worthwhile info.

Any additional comments?

Long story short, the guy thought he had a golden touch, but really he was just lucky. No one knows how to make money, but all the pros agree the most important thing is to not lose too much money in the effort of making money. The End.
