Historia
It was a moment unique in human history: the face-to-face meeting between two men from civilizations a world apart. In 1519, Hernán Cortés arrived on the shores of Mexico, determined not only to expand the Spanish empire but to convert the natives to Catholicism and carry off a fortune in gold. That he saw nothing paradoxical in his intentions is one of the most remarkable and tragic aspects of this unforgettable story.

I chose this book because I love history and knew NOTHING about Cortez except some vague high school history or Hollywood account of greedy Spaniards unnecessarily wiping out the poor, innocent Aztecs . Um. Not the whole story. Granted, the Aztecs were minding their own business when Cortez arrived - having built the largest civilization on the planet. Granted, there was the whole gold and greed thing, but there was also disgust for human sacrifice and roasted babies. Which was worse? This book does a great job of explaining how the whole conquering thing went down. The book was really good and the narrator did a good job. Other reviewers commented on his silly Spanish accent - and I agree. But, it made me snort/laugh every time I heard it - so that's not so bad, is it? I agree with another reviewer - I would have liked to have seen the wonders that Cortez saw.

Could you survive on your own, in the wild, with everyone out to make sure you don't live to see the morning? In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by 12 outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV.

Now I want a bow and arrow!
Revisado: 08-06-11
I got this book as a bribe to my 14 yo daughter to take a boring 3 hour ride in the car with me. It's definitely a YA book, but really - who's not a kid at heart? Once we were home, I found myself sneaking listens on errands in the car and guiltily confessing that I had gotten ahead in our shared book. Little did I know, my daughter was sneaking listens on her computer while I was out! The narrator was ok - not my favorite. But, the story was exciting enough to keep me listening. The movie is currently being filmed near where we live and after reading the book, I can see why it's perfect for the screen. Fantastical creatures, oppressors vs. the oppressed, fashion, beauty, romance, life and death suspense - and a chick who can shoot you dead with a bow and arrow. Whoa. I want one. We'll be getting the next in the series for our drive to the beach next week. It's great to share a book with my kid.

In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women—mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends—view one another. A deeply moving novel filled with poignancy, humor, and hope, The Help is a timeless and universal story about the lines we abide by, and the ones we don't.

Really? Does this book need another 5 Star Review
Revisado: 08-06-11
YES!!! Yet another crazy fantastic review for The Help. I couldn't stop listening! The narration was the best I've ever heard in an audio book!! I can't wait for the movie - but doubt it will hold a candle to the reading performance done by these 3 women. Thanks, Kathryn Stockett for the fabulous way you captured the South - the good, bad and ugly.

Historia
"Dr. Livingstone, I presume?" So goes the signature introduction of New York Herald star journalist Henry Morton Stanley to renowned explorer Dr. David Livingstone, who had been missing for six years in the wilds of Africa. Into Africa ushers us into the meeting of these remarkable men. In 1866, when Livingstone journeyed into the heart of the African continent in search of the Nile's source, the land was rough, unknown to Europeans, and inhabited by man-eating tribes.

Captivated!
Revisado: 08-07-08
This book absolutely captivated me. I couldn't "put it down." Stick with it at least through chapter 6 - I couldn't tell where the author was going. Once I was in step with author, I was HOOKED. Great narration with nice voices for characters. I don't know when another book will measure up to this one for me! Now I want to know more about Africa and Henry Morton Stanley and David Livingston!
